The Modern European Philosophy MA is widely recognised as one of the most significant and innovative courses in its field, and is now one of the most successful philosophy masters programmes in the country.
The MA is based on a focused study of the fundamental texts of the modern European philosophical tradition. It provides an ideal preparation for doctoral research in philosophy or related fields in the humanities and social sciences. It also prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in education, the arts, politics and public policy.
What will you study? This programme offers an opportunity to study 19th and 20th century European philosophy in a structured way, concentrating on the interpretation and analysis of key texts. The programme pays particular attention to the influence of Immanuel Kant's philosophy, and to the debates which structured the development of post-Kantian philosophy in both Germany and France.
The programme begins with a foundation module on Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, and adopts Kant's critical philosophy as an historical and conceptual basis for the understanding of subsequent European philosophy as a whole. Other major authors studied include Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Deleuze and Badiou. Students take four taught modules, and prepare a dissertation on a topic of their choice.
Please note that this is an indicative list of modules and is not intended as a definitive list.
