The Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, located on Rutgers Cook Campus in New Brunswick, was established in 1989 to develop research programs in marine and coastal sciences and to provide a center for the education of marine scientists. The Center for Coastal and Environmental Studies, Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology Extension Center, and the Division of Pinelands Research are part of the Institute. The Institute is housed in a state-of the-art research building which includes seawater, morphometrics, molecular biology, remote sensing, ocean modeling and cartography laboratories. Major equipment includes seawater flumes, a satellite receiving station, a network of small (PCs), medium (Unix-based workstations) and large (16K-node Connection Machine) computer platforms, and electron microscopes.
