Description

Studying for a BSc in Pharmaceutical Science at Lincoln will introduce you to the exciting world of drug discovery, development and vigilance; from the fundamental science behind how pharmaceuticals are identified, through to their mechanism of action, delivery to the site of action and clinic trials.

Our mission is to produce graduates ready to enter the pharmaceutical and associated industries in the UK and across the globe. To this end you will be taught by those who have previous industrial and research experience and who are currently actively conducting research in this subject. The course provides comprehensive training in a wide variety of pharmaceutical disciplines and focuses on structure, function, synthesis, mechanisms of action and formulation of drugs. The course places Pharmaceutical Science in context of the relevant Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology.

How You Study

Pharmaceutical Sciences encompass a wide range of subject knowledge and disciplines. At Level One, you will gain a thorough basic understanding of core subjects. At Level Two and Three, you will learn about analytical methods relevant to pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, pharmacology, including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism and toxicology, drug formulation and delivery and drug manufacture. The pharmaceutical industry is regulated to safeguard public safety and so you will also learn about the regulatory environment of the major regulatory agencies and quality standards such as Good Laboratory Practice and Good Manufacturing Practice.

The course includes lectures, seminars, laboratory-based practical classes and visits to specialist centres as well as lectures from visiting scientists from the pharmaceutical industry. The development of the drug development process in its widest sense and the associated practical skills that are directly applicable to industry is a key element of the course.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Pharmaceutical Science might lead to a job in one of the large pharmaceutical companies, but there are also many opportunities in a myriad of smaller biotechnology companies in the UK, Europe and even further afield. The large pharmaceutical companies are increasingly contracting out expertise to Contract Research Organizations (CROs), which are now growing across the world. In addition to a science-based career, a degree in Pharmaceutical Science may open the door to sales and marketing, project management or programme management. There are also opportunities in the regulatory side of the business, including quality assurance. Some students choose to continue their studies at MSc and PhD level.
