Description

Philosophy and English Literature is a BA Honours degree offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It allows you to combine studies in English Literature and Philosophy in order to develop an understanding both of the study of literary texts and of key theories and ideas in Western thought.

The Philosophy component of the programme allows students to specialise in key areas of the discipline, including critical thinking and rhetoric; ethics; philosophy of mind; religion; theory of knowledge; meaning; philosophy of education, philosophy of madness, and other issues in classical and contemporary philosophy.

The English Literature component of the degree emphasises literature since 1800, and interprets ‘English Literature’ broadly to include drama and visual narratives as well as fiction and poetry, visual art and theatre. The courses look at the historical, social and cultural contexts in which texts are produced and received.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To equip students with an understanding of the value and role of philosophy across a range of practices and subjects
  • To provide a grounding in English literature from the Renaissance to the present day
  • To provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment which promotes the intellectual and personal development of students.
