Description
Our distinctive MPhys Physics with a Year of Experimental Research is available to our first-class MPhys students who will be given the opportunity to spend their final year immersed in a research environment in our world-class materials and photonics laboratories. You will have the opportunity to work on any of our areas of expertise, from photonics to nanotechnology to the quantum properties of matter.
The MPhys Physics with a Year of Experimental Research will build upon the BSc Physics programme and give you a more advanced understanding of materials physics. This flagship programme is intended for students who wish to go on to study for a PhD. We aim to give you the skills and experience that will put you ahead of your peers.
Our MPhys students have the option to move into these programmes once they have arrived in Southampton and established themselves as first-class students typically you will move into the programme in your second year. Your courses will then be carefully coordinated to fast track you in three years to the frontier of knowledge in quantum materials.
In your final year, you will join our Quantum, Light and Matter Research Group. Potential themes of your research include:
- condensed matter
- cold atom
- semiconductor
- magnetism and superconductor physics
- nanostructures
- nanomaterials and nanofabricated devices
- optoelectronics
- polymer and semiconductor chemistry
