The Bachelor's program in Political Economy at the University of Konstanz offers students a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education that combines the principles of political science and economics to better understand the complex mechanisms shaping our global and local societies. Educational organisation
Structure of the ProgrammeThe programme comprises five modules:
- Methods
- Foundational courses in economics
- Foundational courses in political science
- Advanced seminars
- Master's thesis
First Semester
Students take one methods course, one foundational course in economics and two foundational courses in political science:
- Research Design I (9 ECTS)
- Advanced Microeconomics or Advanced Macroeconomics (10 ECTS each)
- "International Relations and European Integration" and "Comparative Public Policy and Politics" (7 ECTS each)
Second Semester
Students take one methods course, one foundational course in economics, one foundational course in political science, and one elective advanced seminar:
- Research Design II (9 ECTS) or alternatively Applied Econometrics (8 ECTS)
- Political Economy (10 ECTS)
- International Organisations and International Political Economy (7 ECTS)
- One advanced seminar (6-7 ECTS)
Third Semester
Depending on the course selection of the second semester, students take:
- Applied Econometrics (8 ECTS) or alternatively Research Design II (9 ECTS)
- Two advanced seminars (12-14 ECTS)
- Master's colloquium (5 ECTS, Track B students only)
Fourth semester
Track A (Fast Track to a PhD)
Students who plan to continue their studies in the Graduate School of Decision Sciences submit their Master's thesis (15 ECTS) and attend two PhD seminars offered by the Graduate School of Decision Sciences (10 ECTS each).
Track B (Generalisation)
Students who do not plan to pursue a PhD at the Graduate School of Decision Sciences prepare and hand in a Master's thesis (30 ECTS).
Forms of assessment
Students take written exams for courses. For seminars, students complete a presentation and an essay. Forms of assessment are in accordance with the regulations of the two participating departments.Course objectives
Graduates of the programme are awarded the degree Master of Science (MSc) in Political Economy.With the acquired skills, graduates will be highly competitive in the market for top-quality jobs in academia, public administration, international organisations and multinational firms. Furthermore, the programme is particularly suitable for applicants who wish to pursue a doctoral degree and move on to an academic career.
Language requirements
For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, proof of English proficiency via one of the following tests must be provided:- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (minimum grade: C)
- IELTS (minimum grade: 5.5)
- TOEFL (minimum grade: 87 Internet-based)
Academic requirements
An above-average Bachelor's degree in economics or political science from a recognised university with a standard minimum study period of three years. Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree course who have not yet graduated are also welcome to apply.Information about the application process can be found here:

Enrolment fees
Students currently pay a student welfare fee of 60 EUR and an administration fee of 80 EUR per semester.Costs of living
