The Department of Economics and the Department of Politics and Administration offer a two-year Master's programme in Political Economy.
The objective is to provide Master's students with a modern and comprehensive, postgraduate education in economics and political science that will allow them to conduct high-standard research in the fascinating field of political economy.
The programme's focus is on training in quantitative theoretical and empirical methods, and on the application of these methods to analyse challenging and topical issues in various policy fields, such as social policy, public finance, education policy, trade policy, and security affairs.

Educational organisation

Structure of the Programme

The programme comprises five modules:
  • Methods
  • Foundational courses in economics
  • Foundational courses in political science
  • Advanced seminars
  • Master's thesis

First Semester
Students take one methods course, one foundational course in economics and two foundational courses in political science:
  • Research Design I (9 ECTS)
  • Advanced Microeconomics or Advanced Macroeconomics (10 ECTS each)
  • "International Relations and European Integration" and "Comparative Public Policy and Politics" (7 ECTS each)

Second Semester
Students take one methods course, one foundational course in economics, one foundational course in political science, and one elective advanced seminar:
  • Research Design II (9 ECTS) or alternatively Applied Econometrics (8 ECTS)
  • Political Economy (10 ECTS)
  • International Organisations and International Political Economy (7 ECTS)
  • One advanced seminar (6-7 ECTS)

Third Semester
Depending on the course selection of the second semester, students take:
  • Applied Econometrics (8 ECTS) or alternatively Research Design II (9 ECTS)
  • Two advanced seminars (12-14 ECTS)
  • Master's colloquium (5 ECTS, Track B students only)

Fourth semester
Track A (Fast Track to a PhD)
Students who plan to continue their studies in the Graduate School of Decision Sciences submit their Master's thesis (15 ECTS) and attend two PhD seminars offered by the Graduate School of Decision Sciences (10 ECTS each).

Track B (Generalisation)
Students who do not plan to pursue a PhD at the Graduate School of Decision Sciences prepare and hand in a Master's thesis (30 ECTS).

Forms of assessment

Students take written exams for courses. For seminars, students complete a presentation and an essay. Forms of assessment are in accordance with the regulations of the two participating departments.

Course objectives

Graduates of the programme are awarded the degree Master of Science (MSc) in Political Economy.
With the acquired skills, graduates will be highly competitive in the market for top-quality jobs in academia, public administration, international organisations and multinational firms. Furthermore, the programme is particularly suitable for applicants who wish to pursue a doctoral degree and move on to an academic career.

Language requirements

For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, proof of English proficiency via one of the following tests must be provided:
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (minimum grade: C)
  • IELTS (minimum grade: 5.5)
  • TOEFL (minimum grade: 87 Internet-based)

Academic requirements

An above-average Bachelor's degree in economics or political science from a recognised university with a standard minimum study period of three years. Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree course who have not yet graduated are also welcome to apply.

Enrolment fees

Students currently pay a student welfare fee of 60 EUR and an administration fee of 80 EUR per semester.

Costs of living

Approx. 660 EUR per month to cover personal expenses

Students have the possibility of working as student assistants in the participating departments.

Funding opportunities within the university

Scholarships are available for particularly suitable Master's students, who may be admitted to our Graduate School of Decision Sciences after the first three semesters of the Master's programme.

The International Office and the Language Institute (Sprachlehrinstitut) offer orientation on living in Konstanz, German academic culture, and language courses for newcomers to make it easier for you to settle into your new surroundings.
