Requirements

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale over the last approximately two years.
  • An immediately prior degree in Political Science. However, a prior degrees in a related discipline (such as Canadian Studies, International Relations, Philosophy, Sociology, History, Economics, Public Policy and Administration) may be considered for admission. Students with an immediately prior degree far removed from Political Science, will not be eligible for consideration for admission.
  • For applicants whose primary language is not English, you must have Proof of Proficiency in the English language fulfilled in one of these ways: TOEFL (105, internet-based; 600 paper-based); IELTS (7.5); MELAB (86); PTE (75).  
  • All degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the University of Calgary after you submit a complete application.
  • Proof of agreement to supervise from a faculty member in your proposed area of thesis research. An email from the faculty member with tentative agreement is sufficient. Please note: tentative agreement is not a guarantee of admission, however admission will not be granted without a tentative supervisor.
  • A non-refundable, required application fee:  $125 for Canadian applicants; $145 for International applicants.
  • Two references. Once you initiate your application your referees will be provided with instructions for completing their on-line reference.
  • A research proposal of no more than one page which outlines the objectives of the research, the context, methodology, and the contribution to the advancement of knowledge.
  • A sample of your academic work, usually a course or research paper.
  • Two official sets of transcripts, in sealed, endorsed institutional envelopes, sent directly by institutions from all post-secondary institutions attended. Transcripts issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by an exact certified English translation.

Scholarships

All admitted MA students receive guaranteed funding for two years:

  • Your funding offer will generally range from $18,000 to $22,000 in Year I and $10,000 to $12,000 in Year II, when tuition fees are lower.
  • Funding offers generally are made up of a teaching assistant position as well as scholarship money.
  • Your tuition fees are not included in the funding offer and must be paid separately.
