The Master of Public Health is an 80 unit postgraduate program. The program includes 40 units of Compulsory courses and 40 units of Directed Courses, which can be selected from a range of options. The program will be offered in both on campus and online modes. The aim of the Master of Public Health is to provide graduates with the skills required to improve population health, through appropriate planning and evaluation, assess determinants of health and illness, develop and implement effective and efficient approaches to health services and programs and to demonstrate specialist skills in research and professional practice in the field population health practice, health promotion, health management, research methodology or medical statistics, depending on the student’s chosen field.

The program will be of interest to individuals of all ages, at any stage of their career, who have a basic undergraduate degree and are working in, or intending to work in, the area of public health. This includes clinicians and allied health professionals, health planners and managers, individuals working in health promotion, health protection or health surveillance. The program has a strong quantitative component, and builds on a good national and international profile of the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, based on 25 years of postgraduate education and 18 years of distance learning.

Career Opportunities

It is envisaged that Public Health Practice graduates will work in Public Health Units, State and Commonwealth Departments, General Practice and Non-government organisations and academic institutions.
Health Promotion graduates will be able to function as health educators, health promotion officers and field scientist/practitioners in a wide range of Federal and State agencies.
Research Methodology and Medical Statistics - graduates will be working in the design and implementation of population based and clinical research studies within Universities, Public Health Units and Clinical Services, State and Commonwealth Departments and Non-government organisations. Health Management graduates will be working or planning to work as public health administrators, managers as well as clinicians and medical practitioners and provide essential managements skills

The Master of Public Health will provide you with a comprehensive education at a superior level. Designed for individuals who have already successfully completed a bachelor degree in an approved public health related discipline, you will be required to complete eight courses, four of which are compulsory. These courses will have you studying:

  • biostatistics – where you will be introduced to basic statistical concepts in data presentation, probability distributions, confidence intervals hypothesis testing, sample size and power. You will learn to understand statistical reasoning and its application to epidemiological studies as well as read and critically evaluate the statistical section of journal articles.
  • epidemiology – which will introduce you to the basic concepts including the distribution and determinants of disease in specific populations and the application of this knowledge to the evaluation and control of health problems in the community.
  • public health – you will learn the biological, social and environmental causes and patterns in disease in populations, as well as gain an understanding of economic and political processes in determining evidence-based interventions to address those diseases of significance within populations.
  • social and ecosystem health - this course draws together two important emerging areas of public health: social determinants of health inequality and the ecosystem health perspective (ecohealth). You will come to understand the social and ecosystem causes of human disease which is essential for developing and implementing effective public health policies.

Electives include infectious disease surveillance, methods in pharmacoepidemiology, research protocol design and qualitative methods in health research, just naming a few.

AQF Level 8 Honours applicants will hold a Bachelor Honours Degree in an approved health related discipline.AQF Level 7 applicants will hold a Bachelor degree and a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate in a health related discipline and or meet Recognised Prior Learning requirementsRecognition of Prior LearningRPL will be assessed by the Program Convenor using the information provided below:Provide a portfolio demonstrating advanced continuing professional development and education in an approved health related disciplineProvide a detailed resume/CV setting out educational qualifications and work experienceInterview (where necessary)International students must also must provide evidence that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirements of 6.5 with a subtest no less than 6.0 have attained the relevant IELTS standardInternational students must submit transcripts from previous education qualifications in English or with an authorised English translation.
