Description

Russia is an important player in European and global politics, and its economy is being transformed rapidly, with Western business spending billions of pounds investing in Russian and former Soviet markets. Many of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe have joined or are about to join the European Union.

Our aim is to provide you with the opportunity to develop an in-depth and wide-ranging understanding of Russia, drawing on the cutting edge of research in these fields. You'll become familiar with general concepts in the social sciences, literary, cultural and historical studies, and will be able to apply these to the specific cases of Russia and other former socialist countries in the region.

An integral part of our undergraduate degrees is the year abroad which can be spent in Moscow, St Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Tver, Petrozavodsk or Volgograd at colleges where we have special links; also, students who come in with no knowledge of Russian spend four weeks in Petrozavodsk during the vacation at the end of the first year on a specially-run language course. If you are a keen linguist, there is the chance to learn Polish in the second and final years or Ukrainian in the final year. To complement your language studies, you will be able to choose study options in history, politics, social anthropology and literature.

Course Content

No prior knowledge of the Russian language is necessary to enter our degrees. In the first and second years, students are divided into small groups according to whether they are beginners or have an A level or equivalent in Russian. (Students with AS level Russian are placed in the advanced group, and given extra tutorial support to catch up.) After the end of the first year, the beginners travel to the city of Petrozavodsk in Russia for an intensive four-week language course, for which many of the costs are covered by the University.

The year abroad - You can choose to spend your year abroad in various locations including Moscow, St Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Petrozavodsk, Tver and Volgograd, spending either two semesters in one place or splitting them between two different places, for instance a semester in Moscow and a semester in Tver (if you are studying Russian with another language, your year abroad can be split between Russia and the country where they speak the other language of your choice). There is also the opportunity to spend a semester in Krakow, Poland.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching is by means of a mixture of small group oral classes, tutorials, seminars, classes and lectures. Assessment methods vary, but usually involve a mixture of assessed written work and examinations.
