The social work degree will prepare students for entry-level professional practice in social work. The profession promotes advocacy, social change, positive human relationships and the empowerment of people to enhance their well-being. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work, an increasingly important profession in today’s rapidly changing world.

The Bachelor of Social Work provides a sound knowledge of the political, behavioural and social sciences and prepares students for a range of professional social work job opportunities.

The Bachelor of Social Work qualifies individuals who are equipped with the intellectual ethical and professional methods to undertake professional social work in a range of contexts.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Social Work degree will have a broad and coherent body of knowledge in the political, behavioural and social sciences, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts of social work and social policy and be able to function as reflexive practitioners within the human service context.

The students will complete 144 units of study comprising 81 units of core studies, social policy and social work theory, 4.5 units of free elective, 31.5 units of practice skills and 27 units of field placements.

Students will be required to undertake a screening and background check through the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI). The screening must be completed prior to being accepted for a placement.
In addition, students who are completing any site observations, activities or professional experience placements and social work with older people, vulnerable people or people with a disability, must undertake mandatory training in Child Safe Environments and Responding to Abuse and Neglect prior to the commencement of the activities or placements within the program.
