Migration and Ethnic Studies (MES) explores the dynamics of human mobility in the twofold context of globalisation and the persistence of nation-state boundaries.
MES examines how those dynamics translate into ethnic stratification, economic inequality, and cultural diversity in both countries of departure and countries of destination. The core and elective courses of the MES programme review a wide array of issues, ranging from decisions to emigrate, to the role of migrant networks, the history of the nation-state and the production of borders, contemporary migration policy in comparative perspective, transit migration and south-south migration, migration and asylum law in Europe, citizenship and migrant (il)legality, social movements and migrant organisations, work, employment, and migrants in labor unions, migrant entrepreneurship, transnational identities and practices, cultural and religious diversity, Islam and Islamophobia, gender, sexuality, class and ethnicity, urban segregation, migrants and education, lifestyle migration, students, expatriates, and other high-skilled migrants. The programme hosts guest speakers from a variety of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, political science, and geography, as well as practitioners such as lawyers, documentary makers, labor organisers, and government officials.
