Statistics is an important science and an essential tool in social planning as well as in almost all empirical sciences; examples include research in pharmacology, biology, economy, and psychology. Statistics is also used in industry when developing new products, production planning, and controlling quality of produced items.
The masters programme in statistics gives a general and firm foundation of statistical theory and statistical methods. Originating from this theory and based on the students interests, it is possible for the student to specialise in analyzing problems in some particular area of applications.
The aims of the program are to provide both greater breadth and greater depth in the statistical discipline. After completion of the programme the student is expected either to work with qualified statistical analysis in the private or the public sector or to continue with graduate studies in statistics.Mandatory courses in the programme are Mathematics, Probability theory, Statistical inference, Statistical computations, and Statistical methods.
A number of optional courses and a degree project complete the specialisation. Examples of optional courses include courses in biostatistics, experimental planning, survey sampling, and methods for regression analysis.
Program structure
The programme comprises two years of full time study (120 ECTS credits). These include 45 ECTS credits of
mandatory courses, 45 ECTS credits of optional courses and 30 ECTS credits of a master thesis.
The instruction is given in the form of lectures and tutorials for all the courses. The instruction will be in English
if necessary. As far as possible the students will work independently with exercises.
For all courses and the master thesis the letters A-E denominate a pass, where A is the highest grade. There are
also grades denominating a fail, Fx and F, where Fx is higher than F. In exercise-oriented courses or modules the
grade Pass or Fail can be awarded.
