This program aims to train "highly educated, internationalized engineers" having a wide spectrum of technical knowledge from fundamentals to their applications. Degree recipients in this program are expected to participate as leaders in international projects such as overseas deployments by Japanese companies, development projects by international organizations with creative and innovative manners in the related fields. This program consists of six special courses providing a platform for engineering relevant to overseas deployment and development projects. Students enrolled in each special course learn specialized subjects and the others, in addition to liberal arts including Japanese language and culture. Furthermore, students take internship program primarily in domestic companies. The students will be educated in Integrated Doctoral Education Program, in which they are expected to study from Master's to Doctoral Education Programs continuously for the both degrees.

All lectures offered in this program are given in English. The students can learn the following subjects: 1) specialized subjects in the enrolled course, 2) subjects in the other courses relevant to the specialty, 3) common subjects in engineering, and 4) public subjects, such as Japanese language and Japanese cultures. Beside the above subjects, the students are required to take part in Off-Campus Project, that is, internship program primarily in domestic companies.

Program requirements for the Master's Degree in Sustainable Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology typically include the completion of coursework in core and elective subjects related to sustainable development, environmental engineering, energy systems, and resource management. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related field from an accredited institution. Applicants are usually required to demonstrate proficiency in English, often through TOEFL or IELTS scores, to ensure effective participation in international classes and research activities. Submission of academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose outlining research interests and career goals are standard components of the application package.

Once admitted, students are expected to enroll in designated coursework covering topics such as sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy technologies, environmental policy, and life cycle assessment. They are also required to complete a research project or thesis under the supervision of faculty members specializing in sustainability, environmental systems, or related areas. This research component typically involves original investigation, data analysis, and the presentation of findings in a thesis report, which must meet the academic standards of the university.

In addition to coursework and research, students may participate in seminars, workshops, and industry collaborations to gain practical experience and stay abreast of current trends in sustainable engineering. The program aims to develop students’ technical competencies, analytical skills, and understanding of socio-economic factors influencing sustainability initiatives. To graduate, students must meet the minimum credit requirements, pass comprehensive examinations if applicable, and produce a successful thesis that demonstrates their ability to apply engineering principles to solve real-world sustainability challenges.

Throughout the program, there is an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, innovation, and the ethical considerations of engineering solutions aimed at environmental preservation and social responsibility. The Tokyo Institute of Technology promotes active engagement with international sustainability projects and encourages students to participate in global networks, preparing them for leadership roles in academia, industry, or policy-making related to sustainable development.
