From the perspective of teaching Chinese as a second language, this programme places equal emphasis on theoretical and methodological frameworks of language teaching, the knowledge base and classroom practices, as well as cultural elements and comparative studies of language teaching. The programme aims to foster the teaching of Chinese as an international language and related research in Hong Kong. Graduates of the programme will develop a global perspective on teaching Chinese as an international language, while gain essential professional knowledge and practical strengths in teaching Chinese as a second language, thereby equipping them for teaching the Chinese language in a variety of settings.

Requirements

  • Graduated from a recognised university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
  • Graduated from an honours programme of a recognised university with a Bachelor’s degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
  • Completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
  • Pass an entrance examination or interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education;
  • TOEFL (normally not lower than 550 Paper-based; 213 computer-based; and 79 internet-based); OR
  • IELTS (Academic) (normally not lower than Band 6.5); OR
  • GMAT (Verbal, normally not lower than 21);
  • Applicants should have work experience in areas related to Chinese language education; should demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in Chinese reading and writing; and should be highly proficient in Putonghua (equivalent to a second class grade in the Putonghua Proficiency Test administered by the State Language and Writing Commission).
