Transportation is an essential and integral part of our modern society. Population growth and environmental problems create challenges that the transportation industry must address with new and innovative solutions. Transportation designers can contribute to this development by producing competent products that appeal to the hearts and minds of people. Design, which is a crucial part of product development, strongly affects the way we utilise and understand many things in our environment.
A great deal of time is devoted to project work in collaboration with design and research departments and companies.
The Transportation Design Programme at Umeå Institute of Design is unique for covering general transportation problem areas and its relation to the transport industry worldwide. The study programme is based on the Scandinavian design tradition, which emphasises the understanding of the users´ interests and needs as a key to successful products. The studies convey the ability to work with conceptual ideas, genuine knowledge of work development in the automotive industry, and a good comprehension of the use of modern methods and aids in transportation design.
During the two years education at Umeå Institute of Design students can develop specific knowledge in subjects like Colour and Trim Materials, Strategic Design, 3D Physical and Computer Aided Design and Animation Design
The Programme gives the student competence to work with design and development of different types of vehicles, from bicycles and cars to public transportation means such as trains, buses and aircrafts. This is the first course of its type in the Nordic countries.
Students entering the masters in Transportation design must have a basic understanding of designer tools, together with a competent level of sketching skill.
They will develop their creative thinking process with tutoring support focused on trying to solve future transportation
problems.
Students will explore how vehicles of all types can be designed and developed to be integrated into a growing awareness of the environmental issues.
Students must make their design concepts realistic, building around future lifestyles, but equally the designs must be attractive and desirable.
The essence of the student work will be about form and function in balance with the human needs at the centre of their design development process.
In the second year the students focus on specific design areas.
Their final degree project allows them to fully experience the
design process by connecting to the transport design industry.
This connection gives the student valuable experience in becoming a professional designer.
