The European Union transport policy has the purpose of ensuring a high level of mobility to people and businesses throughout the EU.Traffic in Europe is dominated by road transport. It every day serves all Europeans. Society major and long-term investments are focused on construction of transport infrastructure. To ensure the further development of transport infrastructures in Latvia the society required highly skilled professionals who can design roads, bridges and other transport infrastructure facilities, manage and maintain them during its service life, as well conduct scientific researches and to develop the new construction engineering theories and methods.

Professional bachelor study program “Transport infrastructure engineering” proposed in Riga Technical University is developed in the light of higher-education trends in Europe. Nominal length for full-time studies is 4,5 years. Program is developed to be recognizable in Europe. The students get both theoretical knowledge and practical skills and could be competitive in a European labor market.

The aim of bachelor study program is to prepare specialists having theoretical knowledge, as well as skills and competences necessary for industrial and research work in transport infrastructure engineering.Bachelor study program provides qualification: Professional bachelor degree in Transport Infrastructure Engineering and Transport Infrastructure Engineer qualification. During bachelor studies students have lectures, practical and laboratory works, as well as individual studies and five course projects. The program included practical training during semester praxis in industry companies, where the students should apply the theoretical knowledge’s practically and obtain the professional skills. The development of practical skills has been provided in working on study projects, where students preparing designs based on really topographical plan and geological section.

The content and realization of the study program ensure their sustainability and correspond to main aims of the higher education - the development of personality, democratic society and research, conformity with labor market demands.

All students are welcome to participate in research projects and part-time work in specialty (about 60% of bachelors combine studies with research work or part-time work in specialty): this develops problem-solving skills, ability to work in the group. Problem-solving skills of students are developed during research seminars and research work; courses envisaging course works and projects (as team work), also improve these skills. Many students participate in research projects at other institutions and industrial enterprises. Working in specialty motivates students for further studies.

Subjects of Transportation engineering are taught by academic staff of high qualification –professors, associated professors, docents and lecturers. All teaching staffs are involved in research work.The main scientific fields are: Road and traffic safety; Analysis of the road bituminous coating; Analysis of bridge structure safety and durability; Optimization of spatial parameters for road projects. The academic staff is involved in the realization of State research program; industry ordered scientific research works, international projects.
