The Master's programme offers a broad training in urban and regional planning, with a focus on strategic planning and mobility in transformative spaces as well as urban development and real estate.
The Urban and Regional Planning programme offers students a thorough understanding of advanced theories and methodologies of urban and regional planning, with a focus on urban and metropolitan areas. Core elements are drafting spatial plans, policies and projects (spatial interventions), understanding actor constellations, knowing the institutional conditions of spatial interventions and the international comparison of spatial planning traditions and metropolitan governance. Students also gain knowledge of relevant research methods to undertake planning research and will apply acquired theories, knowledge and research skills in a Master's thesis. In summary, the programme trains students to analyse (by reflecting on research and by doing research) and act (by critically assessing existing interventions and by drafting new interventions).
The Master's programme in Urban and Regional Planning consists consists the following elements:
- Planning methodologies (6 ECTS)
- Innovatice international planning practices
(6 ECTS) - Strategic planning and metropolitan transformation
(6 ECTS) - Transport planning (6 ECTS)
- Real estate and area development (6 ECTS)
- Planning research: methods & techniques
(6 ECTS) - Master thesis project (24 ECTS)
Topics
In the various Master courses many topics are related to the lecturers' research.
Examples include
- comparative analysis of European metropolitan areas such as Copenhagen, Strasbourg and Vienna,
- institutional requirements for multiple land use,
- the southern wing of the Randstad,
- strategic planning in the northern wing of the Randstad,
- transition paths to sustainable urban mobility, or
- support for transport and land use strategy-making.
Thesis
Students complete the Master Urban and Regional Planning with a thesis where they apply planning theories, methods and techniques. Students write their individual thesis in a masterthesis project.
Fieldwork can be carried out abroad for the thesis (although not necessarily) and students can apply for University funds.
Degree requirements
The MSc in Urban and Regional Planning is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.
Language
The whole programme is in English language, although Dutch students have the right to do their exams in Dutch language since this programme is Dutch accredited.
Huygens scholarship
The Dutch government has allocated a vast amount for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. The Nuffic is administrating the Huygens scholarship. Please find all all necessary information about application and selection on their website.
! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.
The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.
Amsterdam Merit Scholarship
The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.
Selection procedure
1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).
2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.
3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.
Ahold Scholarship Programme
Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.

Ford Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are provided for students from a selection of countries worldwide. For more information see the Nuffic website.
