    Do you want to work with optimisation of exististing constructions or with creation of new innovative products? As a graduate in Electro-Mechanical Systems Design, you will be able to engineer systems and devices where mechanics, electronics, and intelligent control systems are integrated tightly. In this way, synergetic advantages can be exploited in order to develop truly mechatronic products where different technologies are merged together in the best possible way for use in e.g. industrial products and in automotive components.

    Optimisation and creation of new products

    Studying Electro-Mechanical Systems Design, you gain knowledge within the areas of mechatronic system design, modelling and analysis of electro-mechanical systems, information technology and control theory. This enables you to take part in interdisciplinary technical development and research projects.

    You learn to optimise constructions and to create new products and systems.

    During the programme, emphasis is put on disciplines such as modelling of multi-domain systems, simulation, system optimisation, and applied control engineering.

    The programme offers courses within the following fields:

    • Control of Fluid Power and Electrical Servomechanisms

    • Embedded Micro Processors

    • Finite Element Methods

    • Engineering Optimisation

    • Control Theory: Multivariable and Nonlinear Systems

    • AC Motor Drives: Converters and Control

    Electro-Mechanical Systems Design is a full time two-year Master's programme with an emphasis on intensive laboratory work where you will get the chance of trying and fine-tuning your ideas in practice. Each semester has an overall theme. Within this theme, you conduct a project in collaboration with a company in order to combine lectures and industrial problems. On the first two semesters, each project group consists of 4-6 students. On the last two semesters, the project groups consist of 1-3 students per group. The content of each semester is as follows:

    1st semester

    The overall theme of the first semester is ‘Electric and Fluid Power Servomechanisms’. You will focus on the steering and regulation theory, and on how you design and implement a regulation algorithm for a servomechanism. A servomechanism is a special kind of regulation loop where the goal is to get a mechanism to follow a reference varying in time as precisely as possible.

    2nd semester

    The headline of this semester is ‘Design and control of power transmission systems’. You will focus on a transmissions system with an AC-motor – for example for the energy of electrical vehicles.
    You can for instance work with finding the answers to questions such as:
    How does an electric motor work? And how can the rotation speed be regulated?

    3rd semester

    On the third semester, you have different options to choose between:

    • You can do an internship in Denmark or abroad, where you take part of the daily work in the business. During the internship, you will write a project about one or more of the tasks you had the responsibility of getting done.
    • You can do a study visit at an educational institution abroad or in Denmark.
    • Additionally, you have the possibility to stay on AAU and write a project that either spreads over one or two semesters.

    4th semester

    On this semester, you write your Master’s thesis. Depending on your choice, the thesis will be in the nature of developmental work, further development, or actual research. No matter what you choose, you will make use of the experience and the abilities that you have gained and developed throughout the programme.

    Problem based learning (PBL)

    Aalborg University is famous for its problem-based learning, where you work in a group on a large written assignment. This study method is also called “The Aalborg Model for problem-based learning” and is highly recognised both nationally and internationally.

    The problem-based project work at Aalborg University gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner. You will also follow more traditional instruction, but the group work at AAU ensures that you build a network from the very start of your studies, and that you will not constantly be sitting on your own buried in your books.

    Once you have formed a project group, you need to define a problem together that you want to examine. The problem forms the basis of your project and you are to a great extent responsible for defining this yourselves within a set – though often very broad – theme frame.

    Group work

    At Aalborg University, you usually do your problem-based project work in groups. Typically, you will be part of a group consisting of 4-5 students. Each semester, the group completes a large assignment called a project. You form the groups yourselves depending on your academic interests.
    The group work adds an academic and social dimension to your study programme and, at the same time, it equips you for the labour market where skills in cooperation are very sought after.
    Research-based teaching

    At Aalborg University you will be presented with the most recent scientific knowledge within the different research areas and you are taught by dedicated lecturers. Teaching at AAU is research-based as your lecturers conduct research in the subject area that they teach. Therefore, the educational material often comprises articles from current journals.
