A research-oriented two-year Master's course in biochemistry is offered with the possibility to specialise in one of six focal point programmes: Biochemistry of the Nervous System, Biomolecular Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Plants and Microorganisms, Molecular Medicine, Proteins - Structure and Function, and Molecular Biochemistry of Stem Cells. A subsequent PhD is possible in the doctoral programme of our Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry (GSCB). The MSc programme provides a scientific education that introduces the student to advanced theoretical and experimental approaches in modern biochemistry and molecular life sciences. Many research topics are embedded in collaborative inter-faculty research networks, including Max Planck Institutes and industry collaborations.

Educational organisation

  • Compulsory lectures in biochemistry, bioinformatics, and radiation safety, a biochemical seminar on current topics in biochemistry, and two elective lectures in the chosen focal point programme in the first year
  • compulsory practicals in four focal point programmes in the first semester, and two research-oriented advanced practicals in the chosen focal point programme in the second semester
  • another elective lecture in the chosen focal point programme, one elective lecture in chemistry, and a lecture with practicals in animal research training in the second year
  • one research-oriented, semester-long advanced practical in the focal point programme in the second year
  • Master's thesis in the second year (six months)

Study abroad unit(s)

Not compulsory, but ECTS credits from courses in studies abroad can be accepted.

Internships

There are no internships within the MSc programme.

Forms of assessment

  • Written examinations for compulsory lecture courses
  • oral examinations for elective lecture courses
  • performance in practical courses is graded

Course objectives

The MSc programme provides scientific education which brings students into close theoretical and experimental contact with modern developments in biochemistry, and enables them to solve complex biochemical problems. Lecture courses and practicals in the various focal point programmes bring students into contact with the research activities of the faculty. Many research topics are incorporated into research networks including non-university research institutes. In the Master's thesis, students must show that they are able to solve a biochemical problem independently.
