The MA in Language, Ethnicity & Education will enable you to become conversant with ethnicity and multilingualism in urban education. The programme transcends conventional notions of bilingualism in order to study contemporary multilingualism. Students will develop a theoretical understanding of how globalisation affects language use and ethnicity.

PURPOSE

For all those who teach, lecture or organise educational provision at any level. To enable professionals concerned with education to reflect on their practice and to inform such reflection by extending their knowledge. Students will be made aware of significant current developments in contemporary pedagogical policy and practice.

DESCRIPTION

This programme forms part of our department's successful modular MA programme which has been running for over a decade. Although rooted in practical experience, it emphasises the theoretical study of education. The programme will assist students to become conversant with ethnicity and multilingualism in urban education.

STRUCTURE OVERVIEW Core programme content * 20,000 word dissertation in a topic related to Language, Ethnicity & Education.

FORMAT AND ASSESSMENT In order to gain MA Language, Ethnicity and Education, students must complete and pass four modules (30 credits each) and a dissertation (60 credits). There are no examinations; all modules are assessed by written work. Most of the modules run in the evenings, 5.30-7.30pm.

Minimum 2:2 first degree (or equivalent), plus the PGCE or an equivalent initial teacher qualification. Although teaching experience is highly recommended (especially when related to the subject focus of the MA you are applying for), applicants with appropriate academic qualifications are invited to apply.
