What is immunology and infectious diseases?
Immunology and infectious diseases is the study of how the body copes with bacterial, viral or parasitic infections, cancer, autoimmune diseases and other diseases of the immune system. It is also the study of diseases caused by disorders of the immune system. Autoimmune diseases are diseases that cause your immune system to attack your own body. Immunodeficiency is the result of the inability of the immune system to function in its normal mode. An allergy is the result of the immune system's reaction to substances that are usually not harmful. Immunology also covers the development of the immune system, as well as the malignant growth of immune cells and the epidemiology of infectious diseases.
Program description
Understanding the basic mechanisms of immunity gives an idea of how blood cells develop and how pathogens are recognized and attacked. The development of drugs and vaccines requires an understanding of the concepts underlying immunology. Violation of the regulation of processes regulating immunity can contribute to uncontrolled inflammation, tissue destruction, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, leukemia and related cancers. Immunology includes a wide range of disciplines: microbiology, virology, animal health, genetics, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, etc.
Students studying in the specialty "Immunology and Infectious Diseases" will develop and understand normal immune responses to bacterial, fungal and viral agents and evaluate the potential pathological consequences of these reactions. Students will learn about the events that shape the immune response; about the general biology of pathogens and the mechanisms by which they cause diseases. In addition, basic skills in microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry will be acquired.
Students who have received a bachelor's degree in immunology and infectious diseases will be well prepared for admission to veterinary, medical or other professional educational institutions, postgraduate studies in various fields, including immunology, microbiology, virology, molecular medicine, animal science, molecular biology and biochemistry, or highly competitive jobs as research technicians, laboratory assistants-assistants or sales representatives in a pharmaceutical company.
