The Kore University of Enna, in Italian Università Kore di Enna, is a university founded in 2004 in Enna, the capital city of the Province of Enna, in the center of Sicily and has been visited by two Italian Presidents (Oscar Luigi Scalfaro before, and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi for the final inauguration). The university has very modern facilities; it also has a strong relationships with governments and universities of the Mediterranean Sea countries (Malta, Cyprus, Tunisia) and with some of European and U.S. areas.

The Kore University of Enna has been the object, in its first years of life, of conflicting opinions: the enthusiastic assessments of those who have had the opportunity to visit it have been counterbalanced by sometimes even violently contrary judgments of those who have only heard of it. In recent years, Kore has gained a widely positive image in the world of mass communications and, more importantly, in the evaluation system of universities.

The President of the University and the President of the University Foundation is Cataldo Salerno, a Sicilian professor who is also the President of the Province of Enna. The university has laboratories, auditoriums and a conference and concert hall where important musicians play; other Kore facilities include a sports centre and a residential building for students. Kore is planned to be a large campus in the American style with two Student Houses and many facilities for students. The international relationship of Kore University involves many countries of the Mediterranean Area (Tunisia, Malta, Cyprus, Morocco, etc.) and also American, European and Asian universities. The Kore University of Enna is the newest Sicilian university: in fact, it's the first university founded in Sicily after the unification of Italy, and it was founded 200 years after the foundation of the last Sicilian university, the University of Palermo.

The aula magna of the faculties of Human Sciences and society and of classical, linguistic and training studies, were named after Maria Montessori, Agostino Gemelli and Giovanni Pettinato; the latter first president of the scientific committee promoting the University.

The Kore University of Enna is a free, non-state university. It is not governed by the State or by other public bodies, from which it receives only small contributions. The UKE is based on private and self financing, the proceeds of the scientific activities and student fees. For this reason, spending is very careful and is always of high quality.

  • Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

The University of Enna is born from the original core of the consortium Enna University (CEU), founded in 1995 and chaired until 2003 by Cataldo Salerno. The Consortium was formed initially from the Province of Enna, the Municipality of Enna, and by the Chamber of Commerce, entities which were added later the municipalities of Agira, Assoro, Barrafranca, Centuripe, Leonforte, Nicosia, Piazza Armerina, Regalbuto, Valguarnera Caropepe, all centres in the province of Enna.

The CEU activated in Enna a decentralized University Center with undergraduate courses from both the University of Palermo and the University of Catania. The University Center of Enna soon became substantial; hence the request to establish a new university at the Ministry.

The next step was the establishment of degree courses and scientific laboratories in the "Cittadella universitaria", a complex of buildings owned by the Province in which the university has the main campus, to the valley of Enna, the Citadel was in fact entrusted to the CEU in 1998. on March 17, 1999, the new headquarters of the environmental engineering course was inaugurated, dependent on the University of Catania.

The Sicilian region, in whose territory three universities had already operated for several centuries (Catania, Messina and Palermo), supported the project of a fourth University and identified its seat in Enna with art. 34 of Law 3 May 2001, N. 6.

In 2003, the Minister of Education issued guidelines for the national plan for the development of the university system for the three-year period 2004-2006, within which the establishment of new universities, provided they are not state-owned (also known as "free universities") was allowed. A subject of private law, the Kore Foundation, was then set up and entrusted with the task of proposing the establishment of this body under the name of the Free University of central Sicily "Kore" of Enna.

The project of the Foundation Kore received, in July 2004, the favorable opinion of the national committee for the evaluation of the university system (CNVSU) and, therefore, the minister of education Letizia Moratti, was able to enter the university among the universities of the new institution with the M. D. 284 of the September 15, 2004.

The free Kore University of Enna started its autonomous activities in the academic year 2005/2006. The statute, approved by the minister with the establishing DM, assigns legal representation to the President Cataldo Salerno, creator of the project, and academic coordination to the rector, both indicated by the Kore Foundation.

In the early academic years, along with the degree courses of Kore, also those of the Universities of Palermo and Catania continued to operate in Enna. Since 2010 the Kore University of Enna has acquired all the members of the former decentralized pole and thus remained the only university reality in the city. Complete autonomy was achieved at the end of 2015, after the Kore Foundation had independently decided to move away from the appointment of the president and the appointment of the rector of the University, returning to the original functions of support for the right to study and scientific research. On December 16, 2015 the Kore University of Enna was given a new statute with the approval of the Minister of Education, later issued on February 22, 2016 and published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic n. 53 of March 4, 2016.
