  • Academy of Arts and Design

    The Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University has cultivated a large number of art and design professionals, turning out 8,442 graduates with bachelor’s degrees, 1,085 with master’s degrees and 143 with PhD degrees. In addition, it has trained more than 10,000 people who did not receive academic degrees. Many graduates from the Academy are now holding senior positions in the country’s colleges and universities, research institutes and relevant enterprises. 
    The Academy’s philosophy of teaching and educational set-up has been predominant in the development of China’s modern art and design education. Since its establishment, the Academy – in light of the needs of the state and the general public – has undertaken and participated in China’s principal art and design projects, aptly playing the role of a national research institute for art and design. The Academy put forth the concepts of “arts and crafts”, “industrial design”, and “art design” for its programs at different stages over the past years, always deciding on the direction of China’s art design.

  • School of Aerospace Engineering

    It was founded in 2004 on the on the basis of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and recruited some faculty members from other departments and universities.

    The research in mechanics of the school is highly recognized. It is locating the leading edge in the nation and has international reputation. We have very strong faculty members. Many of them are playing active and important roles in academic societies, conference and journal editing. We have received many research awards on the ministry and nation level.

    The school is now making great efforts to enhance the faculty in aero- and astro- nautics. In fact, we have made significant advances in the past years. We launched the first micro-satellite in China in 2000, and the second satellites in 2004. We will continue our endeavor in the researches in aerospace technologies.

    The school boasts its excellent under and graduate students. Each year there are about 90 fresh undergraduates and about 90 postgraduates joining the school. The school provides a series of courses in fundamental theories and experimental training on mechanics and aerospace technologies. Except postgraduate students, our undergraduate students also have plenty of opportunities to get involved in scientific research.   • School of Architecture

    School of Architecture is one of Tsinghua’s 16 schools. It was founded in 1946 as the Department of Architecture by Liang Sicheng, a renowned Chinese architect and educator, and was transformed into the School of Architecture in 1988, comprised of the Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban Planning. Currently, the school consists of four departments: Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Building Science and Technology. By the end of 2012, the school has a total number of 1140 students, including 626 undergraduate students, 271 master students and 243 doctoral students. The faculty team has 126 members, including 44 professors, 54 associate professors, 12 adjunct professors, 4 guest professors, 6 emeritus professors and 6 visiting scholars. Besides, there are also 64 full-time researchers and 49 post-doctors.

  • School of Civil Engineering

    School of Civil Engineering was founded in 2000, based on two well-known departments in Tsinghua University, namely Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Hydraulic & Hydropower Engineering.

    As one of the most time-honored departments in Tsinghua University, Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 1926, with four sections provided including structure, railway & roadway, hydraulic engineering and municipal sanitation and a considerable number of outstanding talents cultivated. In 1952, during the nationwide re-organization of colleges and departments, Department of Hydraulic Engineering was founded based on the corresponding section, with two programs available, namely river & waterpower station structure and hydraulic dynamical equipment. Meanwhile, Department of Civil Engineering had five programs, namely industrial and civil structure, construction, water supply and sewerage, heating & ventilating discipline, building materials.

  • School of Environment

    As one of the earliest Chinese institutions dedicated to environmental higher education and research, the School of Environment (SOE) of Tsinghua University (THU) is pledged to the development of sustainable solutions that allows minimizing the impact of human activities on environment. Its commitment also includes educating people to embrace the idea of sustainability.

    SOE conducts research in a wide arrange of fields, including water supply, wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid wastes management, environmental chemistry, microbiology, hydrology, ecology, energy and resources, environmental simulation, and environmental management and policy.     The PBC School of Finance (PBCSF), Tsinghua University’s 17th school, was founded on March 29, 2012 as a joint venture between the University and the People's Bank of China (PBC). It was built on the successes of the Graduate School of PBC, an esteemed school founded by the Central Bank in the early 1980s. 

    With the mission of promoting excellence in the finance industry and financial regulation through top-notch education and cutting-edge research, Tsinghua PBCSF, following advanced education modes of international financial programs and business schools, is committed to building a world-class platform for financial education and finance and policy research. 

    The School offers Ph.D. in Finance, Master of Finance, Dual-Degree Finance MBA, Finance EMBA, Global Finance GFD, and Executive Education programs. Through these programs, it contributes to China’s pool of high-level, innovative and globally competitive financial professionals.  

  • School of Humanities

    The disciplines in the School of Humanities include literature, history, philosophy, and the subjects they cover. Currently, the School has 6 Tier-1 Ph.D. and M.A. Degree programs, 1 M.A. Degree program, 4 Bachelor's Degree programs, 4 Postdoctoral programs, 1 national key program, and 3 key programs of Beijing. There are about 180 people on its faculty and staff, including 81 full professors, 72 associate professors and 18 lecturers. The current enrollment is about 1200 undergraduates, about 200 Master’s degree students, about 210 doctoral students, and about 40 postdoctoral fellows. Additionally, there are more than 1,000 international students who come to study Chinese language and culture at its International Chinese Language and Culture Center every year.

    The School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University was founded in April 2002. Inheriting Tsinghua's tradition of comprehensive and interdisciplinary education, TSJC aims to give students world-class journalism and communication education guided by advanced educational concepts and international standards. Every year, hundreds of graduates leave TSJC to take top-level journalism and communication jobs in and outside China. Students at TSJC are offered abundant opportunities to not only sharpen their professional skills, but also develop acute social responsibility crucial for their future success.

    At present, the school has 27 faculty members, including 17 full professors (4 professors emeriti), 9 associate professors and 5 lecturers. Together they outnumber all other J-schools in China in the rate of doctoral degree holders (90%), scholars with one or more years of experience in European, American or Japanese universities (80%), and with media or related industry experience (60%).

  • Law School

    Since its founding in 1920, Tsinghua University’s Law School has graduated many prominent legal scholars, judges and lawyers. Among its ranks are the late Judges Tieya Wang and Ruao Mei, and Justice Duanmu Zheng of the Supreme People’s Court. The restructuring of the higher education system in China led to the Law School’s merger with Peking University and other universities in 1952. In 1995, Tsinghua Law School was reestablished to answer the call for establishing and enhancing the rule of law in China. Backed by the rich history, academic strength, and reputation of Tsinghua University, the Law School has progressed to become a leading institute in legal education and research in China. 

    Comprised of state-of-art facilities and the finest faculty members in China, many of whom have foreign legal backgrounds, Tsinghua Law School has attracted over 1,300 students who are currently enrolled in its various undergraduate and graduate programs. Ming Li Building, a name given to the Law School by Mr. Yiren Rong, former Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, houses the entire faculty. Construction of the building was funded by the “Friends of Tsinghua Law School”, a trust fund established by Mr. Zhijian Rong, Justice Andrew Kwok-Nang Li, Ms. Elsie Leung, and Professor Albert Chen. Within the complex is a comprehensive Law Library, moot court, online legal information center, computer labs, classrooms and faculty offices. Tsinghua Law School prides itself in its top-notch education programs and facilities, and strives to provide the best learning conditions for its students and scholars.

  • School of Life Sciences

    Life Science has a long and prosperous history at Tsinghua University. The Biology Department, founded in 1926, was among the oldest and most prestigious in China. There are more than 40 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering who have studied or worked here. In 1952, the original Tsinghua Department of Biology was incorporated into other Universities. However, 32 years later, in 1984, the Department of Biological Science and Biotechnology was reestablished, with Professor Mu-ming Poo being the founding Chairperson and Professor Nanming Zhao as the Vice Chair. In September 2009, to accelerate the research and education of life sciences, the Department of Biological Science and Biotechnology was formally replaced by the School of Life Sciences (SLS).

    During the 90 years since its establishment, especially within the 32 years after the re-establishment of the Department of Biological Science and Biotechnology, and under the support of the National “211” and “985” projects, the School has realized major achievements in recruiting talents both nationally and internationally, in building its research team, and in reforming its education models.

    Currently, the School of Life Sciences 

    is one of the most distinctive and influential institutions for higher education and research in biology nationwide. The School of Life Sciences is a National Base for Cultivation of Scientific Talents and National Base of Life Science and Technology Education. The Experimental Teaching Center of Modern Life Science is among the first National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. The School awards doctoral degrees to Biology and Marine Biology majors, in areas such as biophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology, and developmental biology. During the 2012 Ministry of Education assessment, the School of Life Sciences was ranked No. 1 in the Biology category nationally.

    To strengthen its faculty core, the School of Life Sciences has recruited 114 full-time faculty and staff members, including 70 tenure-track faculty, 9 teaching staff, 11 research staff, 21 technical staff, 3 administrative staff, as well as 80 post-doctoral fellows. Among them, there are 5 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 One-Thousand-Talents Scheme Scholars, 12 Cheung Kong Scholars, 21 Outstanding Young Talent of the National Science Foundation for China, 5 National “973” Project PIs and 23 Youth One-Thousand-Talents Scheme Scholars.

    We have emphases in most major disciplines of modern experimental biology. Life Science, the pillar of healthcare and medicine, is at the forefront of modern research and education in the twenty-first century. As Tsinghua University is poised to become a world leader in higher education, life science has been given a top priority for development and expansion. Since 2011, members of the School have published 27 original research papers in world-renowned journals such as Nature, Science, and Cell, with 9 published in 2015.

The School of Life Sciences aims to provide the finest education and research training to students, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Department of Materials Science and Engineering

    Materials Science is the foundation of human civilizations and social development. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of Tsinghua University was founded in 1988, which consist of the Inorganic non-metallicInstitute of Chemistry Engineering Department, Materials Physical Specialty of Department of Physics Engineering and Metal Material Science Specialty of Mechanical Engineering Department. Within 20 years since MSE department established, a high-level research team has been organized; lots of high-qualified scientific outcomes been published and many excellent students came forth, thereby helping the MSE Department to win a good reputation and a positive impact from all over the world. In Dec 27th 2012, the MSE Department was renamed as the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, which is organized by Materials Physical and Chemistry Departments, Materials Processing Engineering Department, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Department, Metallic Materials Department and Composite Materials Department.  
    The School of Materials Science and Engineering has a strong-competitive academic team, 44 Professors/Academic Researchers (including 4Academicians ofthe Chinese Academy of Science, 3 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 5 Academicians of “Thousands of People Plan (China)”), 30 Associated Professors/Associated Academic Researcher, 19 Senior Engineers, 7 Lectures, 3 Part-time Processors and over 30 Post-docs. The School of MSE dedicated to foster the interdisciplinary talents who not only have an international perspective, a creative spirit but also possessan extensive specialized backgroundandan outstanding ability in scientific research. Right now, we have 350 Undergraduates, 197 Post-graduates, 285 Ph.D. candidates and more than 40 International Exchanged students. 10 of the Ph.D. candidates’ works have won the honor of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations.
    The School of MSE has several high-level laboratories: the State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Processing, the Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China, the Central Laboratory sponsored by the School of MSE, Materials Division of State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Teaching Laboratory, and theBainite-Steel Technology Transfer Center supported by the State Science and Technology Ministry.These research and teaching laboratories are fully furnished and utilized with the state-of-the-art equipment and facility for various research activities from the processing to characterization, analysis, and the professional training.
    Academic research within the School of MSE comes along with the international scientific frontier and the national strategic demands; encouraging students to have original fundamental investigation and promoting the applications development for major national science and technology demands. Lots of high-impact research results have been published on the international/national journals and over 80 Patents been held during these years. Meanwhile, many rewards and honors have been achieved, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Invention Award and the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. The mount of SCI (ISI Web of Science) articles and papers has been ranked as Top 1 of the whole Tsinghua University. Teaching ability of the School of MSE in Tsinghua University iscontinuously as No.1 of China Discipline Ranking (CDR).
    The School of MSE has world-wide collaborations for research development and Exchange StudentsSchemes, like USA, France, Japan, Korea and other more than 10 countries. Many well-known academicians of our school are workingfor the international top-level materials science journals and societies, such as Materials Research Society (MRS), Bohmische Physical Society and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), etc.

  • School of Public Policy and Management

    The School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) of Tsinghua University was founded in 2000. As the first graduate school of public administration in China, the School’s mission is to become a world-class institution that actively engages in teaching, research, and consulting in global public affairs.

    Great progress has been made since the founding of the School. SPPM has built an outstanding faculty team and established excellent academic programs. Programs conducted in Chinese include mid-career MPA, research-oriented M.S. and Ph.D. programs in public management. The school has also provided various executive training programs for thousands of senior government officials from China and abroad. The English-taught Master in International Development (MID) and International Master of Public Administration (IMPA) have attracted outstanding students and practitioners from all over the world. The research activities in public policy and management at the school have made significant contributions to the formulation and implementation of public policies in China. Close linkages and partnerships have also been forged with international organizations and academic institutions around the world.

  • School of Social Sciences

    The major disciplines of the School of Social Sciences are political science, sociology, economics and psychology. Currently, the School has five Tier-1 Ph.D. programs, including political science, sociology, theoretical economics, science of physical culture and sports and philosophy, four Bachelor Degree programs consisting of the experimental class of social sciences (with three fields: international political science, sociology and economics) and psychology, four Postdoctoral programs, including political science, sociology, theoretical economics and philosophy, and three key programs of Beijing which are international relations, sociology and science, technology and society. The courses “Analysis of International Relations”, “Principles of Marxist Political Economy”, “Introduction to Deng Xiaoping Theory and ‘Three Represents’ Theory” were named national undergraduate quality courses.
    The School has 83 people on its faculty and staff, including 41 full professors, 27 associate professors, 12 assistant professors and 3 administrative staff. Additionally, there are 71 postdoctoral fellows in the School. The current enrollment is 358 undergraduates, 281 Master’s degree students and 223 doctoral students. Overall, the School has 862 students, including 151 international students and 13 students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
    The School has four departments and two institutes. They are the Department of Sociology, Department of Political Science, Department of International Relations, Department of Psychology, Institute of Economics and Institute of Science, Technology and Society. There are also about 20 interdisciplinary substantial research institutions in the School.

Undergraduate Admissions

Student Life at Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University has more than 110 student associations covering five domains: science and technology, physical training, humanities, arts and public welfare. To name a few: Students' Association for Global Affairs (SAGA), Student Association of Educational Poverty Alleviation (SAEPA) and the Students' Performing Arts Club, Zijing Volunteer Service, Students' Association of Science & Technology, Photography Association, Foreign Languages Association, Association of Student International Communication (ASIC), etc.

International students are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities and join the student associations of the University.
