Wedel is situated in the West of Hamburg and is part of the metropolitan area. City trains and buses provide frequent and easy access to Hamburg with its many attractions. Wedel has about 32,000 inhabitants. Pinneberg is the administrative district. The river Elbe plays an important role, especially in Wedel. Many tourists come here to walk along the waterfront, to see and listen at "Willkomm Höft": Every incoming and departing ship to the port of Hamburg is welcomed or given a farewell with its national anthem. Wedel has an excellent infrastructure, which is a great advantage for the students. The university can be reached by bus, from the halls of residence by foot. The shopping facilities can also be easily reached. There are many supermarkets and shops to buy food and all necessities for daily life. If you want to do your "big" shopping, Hamburg is the best place. Here you can find everything you need! In Wedel, there are many ways to spend your evening. There are a variety of pubs and restaurants. Wedel has two theatres. One of these is a so-called "Theatre-Ship", the "Batavia". The ship also has a pub with frequent jazz and folk concerts. In summer, they run an open-air cinema next to the ship. Outdoor festivals are held in the summer. For example, there is an "oxen-market", a harbour festival, a wine tasting event and several craft markets. If you need medical treatment, you are well-provided for. Wedel has its own hospital, and the university clinics of Hamburg and specialist clinics are not far away. Doctors of all medical specialisations have their surgeries in Wedel.
Students from abroad have several accommodation options. You may decide to live by yourself, share an apartment, stay in the halls of residence, or choose a private rental accommodation. The International Office will assist you in finding the right choice. The cheapest possibility is to rent a room at the Halls of Residence, which is only five minutes from the campus. Most students stay in privately rented accommodation in Wedel or the north-western suburbs of Hamburg. If you do not live in Wedel, it will be necessary to use public transportation or a car to get to the campus. Public transport within the Hamburg metropolitan area (Wedel is part of that) is excellent. When renting private accommodation, it is important to know that the rent mentioned in the advert is for the room/flat only. On top of rent, you will have to pay for heating, electricity, telephone and other charges. Most landlords give an estimate for these costs, called "Nebenkosten", which you should consider as the lower limit.
