The University of Split was officially established on 15 June 1974 when the units having already had an effect in their professional, scientific and teaching areas entered its structure.
As a predominant scientific and teaching public institution in the region the University of Split has expanded during the course of the past 30 years to include eleven Faculties, one Academy of Arts and four University Departments.
There are about 24,000 students enrolled in the University’s undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs.
The focus of the research work carried out by the University is on scientific areas with reference to disciplines characterized by natural, biomedical, cultural, historical, social, economic and other features of the region as a part of the Croatian Adriatic and the Mediterranean region as a whole.

School of Medicine
The School of Medicine in Split was established as an independent faculty on 27th March 1997. It is one of the components of the University of Split which has approximately 24 thousand students. It is situated on the Southern coast of the Split peninsula overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the islands of Brač, Šolta and Hvar. It consists of a basic medical sciences building (laboratories), a building for teaching and administration and a hotel for guest lecturers with a restaurant for teachers and students.
The School of Medicine in Split has five teaching programs: Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy (in collaboration with the Faculty of Chemical Technology) , Nursing and Physiotherapy. The Medicine program annually enrolls 75 students, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy enroll 30 each, Nursing 60 and Physiotherapy 25. The criterion for enrollment is success at the state final exams (Državna matura). The School of Medicine in Split will start a Medicine program in English in the school year 2011/12. It will enroll 30 students, all foreign citizens. The curriculum is governed by the Bologna process. Medicine and Dental Medicine courses last six years, they have 5500 hours of direct classes and 360 ECTS credits each. Pharmacy lasts five years and has 300 ECTS credits.

Currently a new Campus is being built, which was supposed to be finished in 2014 but the economy crisis slowed it down so delays are to be expected. It will house all of the faculties, a large student center with a sports hall, sporting grounds and a University Library.
