Diakonhjemmet University College was established in 1890 as a private, nonprofit college. On this foundation, the accredited higher education institution now comprises about 2300 students and 160 faculty and staff. The core values of the college are summed up in its slogan: “Dedicated to People.” These values also reflect the college’s academic focus, which is solely centered on Health- Social- and Church related programmes on all levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD), and supported by ongoing research in all fields.

The college is independent and operates under the Norwegian Act of Higher Education, but its profile is built upon values associated with the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Even so, the college welcomes all students regardless of religious points of view, and it endeavors to accommodate various religious practices as part of its policy.

For many years the college has consistently enjoyed a high number of applicants. As a result, our student base is highly motivated and is able to enjoy research based education provided by faculty and staff that are both professional educators and researchers. Our graduates generally enjoy a high level of credibility and employability upon entering the labour market.

Diakonhjemmet University College has a Erasmus Charter for Higher Education and a Diploma Supplement Label under the Eramus+ programme.

There are a number of student groups and student activities at the Diakonhjemmet University College. In addition to the interest groups listed in the menu on the right hand side, many social activities are organized during the year.

Examples of activities that have already occurred in recent years are:

  • Ski day
  • Rafting trip
  • Soccer tournament

Since 2003 the Student Pastor and Student Deacon have organized a student trip every fall semester, focusing on nature and the community. The student trip is normally at the end of August from Thursday to Sunday afternoon.

The destinations vary and have previously been to the river Sjoa near Besseggen mountain. Besseggen with activities like rafting, mountain hiking, and to Gaustadtoppen with activities such as walking in the footsteps of the Tungtvann-saboteurs with guide and climbing Gaustadtoppen. During the evenings it’s time for social activities and games, dinner, singing and playing music, service and other socializing activities.

Information regarding this year’s trip and participation will be announced in time before orientation, and there will be a stand with information in the atrium or outside the student café.

Students pay a fee (deductible) for travel, accommodation and some of the food. The various activities such as rafting, hill path and roundtrip by bus is paid individually.
