What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental Engineering is a complex of scientific and engineering methods aimed to improve the environment - maintaining the clear water, air and earth for comfortable life of humans and other living organisms.Environmental Engineering studies the impact of technological progress on the condition of the environment.

Environmental Engineers develop, design and commission various environmental protection mechanisms, organize environmental protection activities in various factories and organizations, and also certify equipment that can affect the state of the environment. In addition, Environmental Engineers participate in the designing of water supply systems, as well as wastewater treatment systems.

Structure of study programs in Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering can be taught either as undergraduate or higher level study program. Sometimes students in Environmental Engineering start their education with a more basic degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology or Engineering, and then apply for a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering.

Bachelor study programs in Environmental Engineering are usually more comprehensive. During the first years of education students undertake courses in Biology, Analytical Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry and other disciplines whose methods and topics are connected with methods and topics of Environmental Engineering. Senior years of Bachelor degree are usually dedicated only to Environmental Engineering and its sub-disciplines - for example, Air Pollution Engineering, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Design of Solid Waste Treatment Systems and more. During the last years of education students are busy working on their research project which they are submitting to complete a degree.

Master study programs in Environmental Engineering are usually more specific than Bachelor study programs. They do not include courses in basic disciplines and students are encouraged to choose elective courses which will correlate with their research, academic and career interests. Therefore, the second (and last) year of education can consist only of elective courses without any compulsory subjects.

Entry requirements for Environmental Engineering applicants

Entry requirements for Environmental Engineering applicants vary from university to university. Applicants for undergraduate study program usually need to have high GPA scores in Natural Sciences. Sometimes universities require at least a one year of undergraduate education in an university of the home country of the applicant (with high GPA scores in related disciplines).

Since most of the study programs in Environmental Engineering which can be found on our website are taught in English, applicants for these study programs need to demonstrate their language fluency. Those applicants whose native language is other from English should take an IELTS, TOEFL or other equivalent language test and submit its results with the application. Those applicants who have already completed a degree in English usually do not have to prove their language proficiency again.
