The Erasmus+ Joint European Master in Environmental Studies - Cities & Sustainability (JEMES CiSu) is a unique 2-year programme offered jointly by the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics and Institute of Wastewater Management and Water Protection (Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, TUHH); the Department of Development & Planning (Aalborg University, AAU); the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambiental (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UAB); and the Department of Environment and Planning (Universidade de Aveiro, UA).

Associate partners

In addition to its core universities in Denmark, Germany, Spain and Portugal, the JEMES CiSu programme also involve a number of associated partner universities in Australia, China and the United States of America, which are responsible for receiving the JEMES CiSu students for half a semester (15 ECTS) during their 3rd semester. This mobility is mandatory for all students except 3rd country students with an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Beijing University of Technology (Beijing, China)

The College of Environmental and Energy Engineering at Beijing University Of Technology includes environmental science and engineering, power engineering and engineering thermo-physics, chemistry and chemical engineering. There are Institute of Environmental Energy Technology, Institute of Environmental Engineering, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Department of Environmental Science, Department of Automotive Engineering, the Department of Refrigeration & Cryogenics Engineering and the Chemical Experiment Teaching Center of Beijing Education Commission. The college has a Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation of Ministry of Education and Key Laboratory of Water Quality Science and Water Environment Recovery Engineering of Beijing Education Commission. There are four doctoral programme and six master programme in environmental and energy fields.

University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia)

The UNSW is one of Australia’s leading international universities attracting outstanding scholars and students from around the world. UNSW takes pride in the broad range and high quality of our teaching programs. Our teaching gains strength and currency from our research activities and our international nature. UNSW has a broad disciplinary base, with Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; the Australian School of Business; Built Environment; Engineering; Law; Medicine and Science and College of Fine Arts which would be available to incoming students from partner institutions.

Beijing Normal University (Beijing, China)

The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) at Beijing Normal University was founded in 1983. IES was one of the first established institutions of its kind in China with the responsibility of providing educational programs and conducting research in the field of environmental sciences. In 2002, IES officially became the School of Environment with augmented ability of educating students and conducting research. The School of Environment now has 66 faculty members in total, including 24 full time professors. Among the 24 FT professors three have been granted the 'Leading Personage for the Scientific Subject Over to the Next Century', two have been granted the 'National Outstanding Youth Science Fund'. Now there are 7 institutes in the school and the Grant and Funds is over 5 million USD per year. It has established a set of theory and method system of the regional strategy environment impact assessment and the key research of school covers eutrophication mechanisms and pollution control, photogedradation etc.

Columbia University (New York, USA)

The Earth Institute at Columbia University comprises more than 30 research centers and some 850 scientists, postdoctoral fellows, staff and students. Working across many disciplines, solutions for problems in public health, poverty, energy, ecosystems, climate, natural hazards and urbanization are studied and created. The Institute focuses on the protection of earth's environment and the spread of social and economic opportunities for all people. The notion is that dealing with issues such as extreme poverty must involve tackling issues such as environmental degradation, and lack of access to health care and education. The work reflects the fundamental belief that the world possesses the tools needed to effectively mitigate climate change, poverty and other critical issues.

The Master of Science in Environmental Studies – Cities and Sustainability (JEMES CiSu) is a unique 2-year programme offered jointly by the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics and Institute of Wastewater Management and Water Protection (Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, TUHH); the Department of Development & Planning (Aalborg University, AAU); the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambiental (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UAB); and the Department of Environment and Planning (Universidade de Aveiro, UA), which enables excellent graduates with first degrees in engineering, science, management and technology to successfully deal with complex urban processes and problems across international, cultural and disciplinary boundaries.

JEMES CiSu follows a worldwide trend towards rapidly growing metropolises, which requires an increased focus on environmental and climate issues in cities and towns. The programme builds on the existing Erasmus Mundus Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES), which has been running since 2007, and thereby incorporates years of experience offering an integrated high-class Erasmus Mundus degree to students from all over the world.

The programme is fully delivered in English and aims to enable excellent graduates with first degrees in engineering, science, management and planning to successfully deal with complex urban processes and problems across international, cultural and disciplinary boundaries.

The European universities offering the JEMES CiSu Master are actively addressing diverse local and regional environmental and socio-economic problems. In order to ensure increased inter-disciplinarily and a broader global scope, the consortium of European universities has linked up with universities in Australia, China and the United States of America, thereby bringing together strong expertise that encompasses the needs and opportunities in several continents and in developing as well as in industrialised countries. Furthermore, all partners have teamed up with local organisations – public and private – in order to provide outreach and networking opportunities and enable real-life application of student work.

The MSc degree is awarded jointly by all four European universities and issued by the JEMES CiSu programme coordinator, Aalborg University.

Students study with at least two European Universities and the option of one further third country university with the programme's delivery over two years providing a greater depth of learning, more organisational engagement and a rich cultural experience.

The programme is full time over 24 months and divided into 4 semesters of study with focus on one overarching theme: Cities & Sustainability.

The programme is divided in two sub-themes:

  • Sustainability Management & Planning (with AAU, and UAB)
  • Sustainable Technologies & Processes (with TUHH, and UA)
Semesters

The first semester (at AAU or UAB) focuses on providing students a strong and comprehensive foundation in understanding the complexities of urban development, globalization, sustainability and quality of life. The aim for the semester is preparation of suggestions to environmental and sustainability management improvements in the city context.

The second semester (at TUHH or UA) offers a comprehensive focus on risk assessment and engineering solutions to various environmental, social, economic and political problem areas that cities exhibit, e.g. integrated waste management, air and water pollution, energy consumption. The aim of the semester is preparation of suggestions for technical improvements and development to solve complex problems associated with urban development and sustainability.

The third semester (third country + one of the European universities) has a strong focus on project work and gaining practical experience. It is dedicated to professional development and the semester will enable students to appreciate theoretical reflective work practice and challenges and to demonstrate proficiency in innovation and integration processes as well as management and implementation of technological and organisational change projects. The aim of the semester is to:

  • Design and execute an individual project study within the topics of the programme
  • Gain practical experience within the subject field
  • Analyse and reflect on educational experiences and professional practice
  • Clarify the Master's Thesis topic.
  • It is the intention that the mobility to a third country and the work there is combined with comparative work in one of the European cities participating in the Master's course. This is supported by one of the four European university partners through additional course modules, or supervision of the students' project work.

    During the fourth semester (same European university as the third semester), the Master's Thesis is completed. In some cases and depending on the university, the Thesis may be combined with the third semester in an extended Thesis. The Master's Thesis is co-supervised by at least 2 partner universities.

    Mobility

    Students may start their studies at either Aalborg University or Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and end their studies at any of the four participating universities. Students must, however, spend their second semester at either Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg or Universidade de Aveiro. Furthermore, they will have the option to study half a semester (15 ECTS) at either Earth Institute, Columbia University (CU, USA), University of New South Wales (UNSW, Australia), Beijing Normal University (BNU, China) or Beijing University of Technology (BJUT, China).

    Limitations:

    • If you are a citizen in or have finished your last degree in one of the four countries of the consortium, please note that you are not allowed to spend more than 12 months in that country. This for an example means that if you come from Germany, you cannot spend your third and fourth semester at TUHH, if you have done your second semester there.
    • Students from either Denmark or Spain may not start in their own country, but will have to go abroad for the first semester.
    • The mobility outside Europe on the third semester is mandatory for all students except students with an Erasmus Mundus / Erasmus+ Category A scholarship. If you are a third-country student, you must do this mobility in a country different from your country of origin.
    • It is mandatory for all students to attend the meetings of the programme. Fall meetings will be held right after semester start in either Barcelona or Aalborg. Spring meetings will be held around April in either Aveiro or Hamburg.
    • All students are required to take at least foreign languange course (besides their native language and English) during their JEMES CiSu studies (the consortium universities offer courses in the language of the specific country for free - additional ECTS).
    A Bachelor's degree or equivalent, at a second-class (upper) level or higher, in an engineering, science, technology, or management subject;A minimum total of 16 credits (ECTS) earned in mathematics and basics of natural sciences such as biology, chemistry and physics;An appropriate level of competence in the English language, through the attainment of, at a minimum, B2 (Effective Operational Proficiency) in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Proof of English language proficiency has to be provided by each student (read more about English language requirements here: http://www.jemes-cisu.eu/joomla3/index.php/application/admission-english).ECTS credits are based on the workload students need in order to achieve expected learning outcomes. Workload indicates the time students typically need to complete all learning activities (such as lectures, seminars, projects, practical work, self-study and examinations) required to achieve the expected learning outcomes. 60 ECTS credits are attached to the workload of a fulltime year of formal learning (academic year) and the associated learning outcomes. In most cases, student workload ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 hours for an academic year, whereby one credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work.     Erasmus Mundus scholarships

    The Erasmus Mundus student scholarships will cover the students' participation costs (including the tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to the students' participation in the course), a contribution to student travel and installation cost as well as a subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the study programme (until graduation - 24 months maximum). Details on the Erasmus Mundus student scholarship amounts are given in the table below:

    Contribution to the participation costs

    • 8,000 EUR per year for scholarship holders from a Partner Country
    • 4,000 EUR per year for scholarship holders from a Programme Country

    Contribution to the travel and installation costs

    • 1,000 EUR per year for scholarship holder residents of a Programme Country for travel costs
    • 2,000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1,000 EUR for installation costs for scholarship holder residents of a Partner Country whose location is situated at less than 4,000 km from the Joint Master Degree coordinating institution (Aalborg University)
    • 3,000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1,000 EUR for installation costs for scholarship holder residents of a Partner Country whose location is situated at 4,000 km or more from the Joint Master Degree coordinating institution (Aalborg University)

    Contribution to subsistence costs

    • 1,000 EUR per month for the entire duration of the Joint Master Degree MD study programme (until graduation – 24 months maximum).
    • Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to the scholarship holders for the Joint Master Degree (study /research /placement / thesis preparation) periods spent in their own country of residence.

    The actual amount of the individual scholarships will vary in accordance with:

    a) the Joint Master Degree length (120 ECTS - a maximum of 24 months);
    b) the student country/region of residence;
    c) the Joint Master Degree participation costs (see more under Participation costs).
