The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore’s oldest and most prestigious university. Its origins date back to 1905 when it was established as the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School. The institution was founded to train medical professionals for the region, addressing the urgent need for healthcare services.

In 1912, the school was renamed the King Edward VII College of Medicine. Over the years, it expanded its academic offerings beyond medicine. In 1928, Raffles College was established to provide education in the arts and sciences. These two institutions played a crucial role in higher education in Singapore and Malaya.

In 1949, the University of Malaya was formed through the merger of King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College. The university had campuses in both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. However, in 1962, the Singapore campus became an autonomous institution known as the University of Singapore, while the Kuala Lumpur campus evolved into the University of Malaya.

In 1980, the University of Singapore merged with Nanyang University, a Chinese-medium institution founded in 1955, to form the National University of Singapore (NUS). This merger aimed to consolidate resources and create a stronger, internationally competitive university.

Since its establishment, NUS has grown into a globally recognized institution, consistently ranked among the top universities in Asia and the world. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across multiple disciplines, including science, engineering, business, law, and the humanities.

NUS has also played a key role in Singapore’s development, producing leaders in government, business, and academia. The university is known for its emphasis on research, innovation, and global partnerships. It has established collaborations with leading universities worldwide, including Yale University, Duke University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Today, NUS continues to be a leader in education and research, contributing to Singapore’s position as a global hub for innovation and knowledge.
