The Ph.D. Program is designed to prepare students for a career in research and/or teaching in their area of specialization. After completing the M.S. Degree (or meeting equivalent requirements) and meeting the minimum standard on theComprehensive Examination (a written exam for 6 classes that the student has taken during the first year at UCSD) to be admitted to or continue in the Ph.D. program, a student must:

  • Successfully complete three advanced graduate courses (in addition to those required for the M.S. degree) approved by the student's dissertation advisor.
  • Enroll in MS200, as required; see course descriptions for requirements.
  • Pass the Literature Review Examination. This requirement must be successfully completed within one year after passing the Comprehensive Examination.

Funding

For the most outstanding first-year Ph.D. students, the Materials Science & Engineering Program may offer financial support in the form of university fellowships and research assistantships. The fellowships include the Materials Science Program fellowships and those provided by the Jacobs School of Engineering. The fellowship award normally starts in September through the end of August. The Jacobs School of Engineering fellowships are reserved for first-year graduate students only.

Awards of financial support are very competitive and, unfortunately, we cannot fund everyone. Stipends range from approximately $7,500 to $30,000 for the academic year, plus tuition and fees.

Program Fellowships are given to the most outstanding PhD applicants to the program. They are provided through the generous support ofthe Graduate Program of University of California, San Diego and the Jacobs School of Engineering. Stipends can range from $7,500 to $30,000/year plus tuition and fees.

Graduate Student Research Assistantships are given to PhD applicants through grants acquired by specific faculty members in the department. Typically, a student will work part time in the lab of a faculty member and earn a starting salary of $22,000/year plus tuition and fees.

Teaching assistantships are given to continuing students in the program on a competitive basis. This helps to insure that the TA's are qualified and familiar with the material.
