The project will identify and optimize lead-free materials to replace lead zirconate titanate ceramics for applications requiring large impact-induced electric charge. The approach will be primarily experimental, with an emphasis on the understanding of the relationship between the composition, crystal structure and piezoelectric properties of a range of ceramic materials. Hence the candidate would acquire excellent skills in ceramic fabrication and characterization, including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy. The project is in collaboration with AWE plc, the UK's Atomic Weapons Establishment, where the candidate will spend a 3 month secondment during the project.

Contents

An EPSRC CASE studentship is available for 3.5 years within the group of Professor Andrew Bell in the Institute for Materials Research at the University of Leeds, to study for a PhD in the field of Piezoelectric Materials.

Requirements

Applications are invited from candidates with or expecting a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1), or equivalent, in a Science or Engineering discipline.

Funding

The studentship will provide the standard EPSRC tax-free stipend of £13,863 p.a, plus top up from the industrial sponsor of at least £3,000 p.a over the 3.5 years of the award.
