The Rutgers Graduate Program in Atmospheric Science (GPAS) offers both M.S. and Ph.D degrees. GPAS faculty conduct research in a variety of topics, including climate dynamics from regional to global scales, synoptic meteorology and extreme events, tropical meteorology, paleoclimate, cloud and radiation physics, ocean-atmosphere interactions, land-atmosphere interactions, and climate-chemistry-aerosol interactions.

Qualifying Examination

The Qualifying Examination consists of a written and an oral section. The written section is a comprehensive examination to test basic knowledge of atmospheric science conducted near the end of each semester. The written portion of the Qualifying Examination will be the same for all students each semester and will cover topics taught in GPAS core courses.Proposal Evaluation

Within one year of passing the Qualifying Examination, the student will present a dissertation proposal to the students Dissertation Committee. The Dissertation Committee is selected by the student and the student's advisor and consists of at least four faculty members who have expertise in the student's dissertation topic, with at least one committee member from outside of GPAS.Dissertation and Final Examination

Ability to perform independent research must be demonstrated through a written dissertation based on the proposal presented at the Proposal Evaluation. The dissertation should be an original contribution to knowledge, and the subject matter must be presented in a scholarly style

Requirements

Any student with a B.S/B.A degree or higher in a mathematical or scientific discipline is a candidate for admission. Students are required to have taken calculus through differential equations (usually 4 semesters), two semesters of physics for the sciences (including laboratory), and one semester each of atmospheric thermodynamics and dynamics. Ideally, these courses should be completed prior to enrolling; otherwise, they should be taken as soon as possible.

Additionally, competency in at least one high-level programming languages is expected. Candidates should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, a verbal GRE score of at least 500 (old scale)/153 (new scale), and a quantitative GRE score of at least 600 (old scale)/148 (new scale). For international, non-native English-speaking applicants, a TOEFL is required in lieu of the verbal GRE. Scientific research experience and contributions are also considered in evaluation.

English Language Requirements
