How have historical events shaped the way we buy and sell goods and services? What impact have historical events had on political, social, economic and cultural contexts?

This course will give you a solid education in the history of Britain, Europe and the world from 1500 to present day, at the same time as gaining a thorough grounding in economics.

You will spend equal time studying history-related and economics-related modules and, like other courses from our Department, we allow you the flexibility to choose optional modules from across our University.

You are required to complete a project in your third year (applicable to all our courses) in either history or economics, and this is an excellent way to evidence the skills you have learnt to future employers or prepare for postgraduate study.

Course Content

The special characteristics of our courses are flexibility and choice. In your first year, you have` two compulsory modules, a choice between two history modules and one optional module within our Faculty of Social Science. There is a great deal of choice for this optional module from our Faculty of Social Science, as most of our first-year modules do not assume any specialist knowledge.
With a small number of exceptions, if you successfully complete the first year of your BA, then you are qualified to enter the second year of that course and a range of other courses: for example, if you take economics, politics, philosophy and sociology, then you have a choice of at least nine possible single or joint honours courses at the end of your first year. This means you can change your course, providing you have taken the appropriate pre-requisites and places are available.
During your second you will have more flexibility with 45 credits of compulsory modules and 75 credits optional modules, meaning you can take five optional 15 credit half-year modules or two 30 credit full-year modules with one 15 credit half-year module. In your final year you will have an even greater deal of flexibility; you will have 90 credits of optional modules and a 30 credit research project, an individual piece of research on a topic that interests you, which is compulsory.
We operate a credit framework for our awards, which is based on principles widely used across the UK university sector. Each module has a credit rating attached and our standard three-year course consists of 360 credits (120 credits in your first year, and 240 credits across your second and final years).

one full-year option or two half-year options from a wide range of options.

Year 2

Making Histories: Themes, Concepts and Sources;
Intermediate Microeconomics;
one history option;
one history half-year option; and
one economics option

Year 3

Dissertation;

one history or economics option

• A-levels: AAB-ABB
• GCSE Mathematics: C
• GCSE English: C
• IB: 33-32 points, including Standard Mathematics grade 4, if not taken Higher Level (we consider IB certificates at the Higher Level on a case-by-case basis)
• Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 12 level three credits at distinction and the remainder at merit (or above) or achievement of the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 6 level three credits at distinction and the remainder at merit (or above).
