Newton Programme enrichment activities
In addition to your academic study, you will be provided with an enrichment programme tailored to your needs and progression plans.
Global Perspectives is taught as a series of seminars that encourages students to explore real-world challenges that will face them as young people in the modern world wherever they may live and work. All students will choose a particular area of interest to explore and present to their peers. Topics include: Practical Ethics, Economics, Environment and Technology. This course provides excellent preparation for undergraduate study by developing independent thinking, and gives you the opportunity to engage in open debate and research on your own topic.
English Language Support lessons will be targeted to the needs of individual students and will improve your spoken English and academic writing. In Year 2, specific support is given to those students requiring IELTS at high level for degree study. INTO University of East Anglia is now a certified IELTS test centre. Students needing to take an IELTS test for university entry will be able to take the test on-site.
All students will join a tutorial group which meets once a week. Activities within the tutor group are focused on developing students interpersonal and communication skills. Additionally, students will have one-to-one tutorials with their Personal Tutor throughout the course.
Where possible, students with an interest in engineering and non-medical science will work towards a CREST Award. This incorporates a research project with an external mentor and external assessment. Through this project you will develop your written and verbal presentation skills.
Students are supported throughout the university application process. They will have the option to attend medical ethics workshops and discuss important topics in the medical world, which are often included in Medical School interviews. Additional preparation sessions are available for those students taking the UKCAT, BMAT, PAT, LNAT and STEP tests. Visiting academics will give lectures on interview techniques and students will have the opportunity to talk to current university students about their own experiences.
