This interdisciplinary MSc programme equips students with the skills, knowledge and expertise to become expert practitioners in nanoscience, whether in industry or academia. The programme provides innovative and novel training, and will support you in the next phase of your career. To date all of our graduates have been successful in obtaining either a PhD place or full-time employment. The programme is assessed in a variety of ways designed to provide feedback on both technical and professional skills, including research skills, presenting, writing, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.

The Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN) represents more than 100 academics from 15 departments in the faculties of Science, Engineering, and Medical and Veterinary Sciences. This rich and diverse support network ensures your training and research is at the cutting edge and is truly interdisciplinary.

The BCFN is based in the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information - the lowest-vibration Nanoscience building in the world.

Core Units

Autumn and Spring Terms

  • Communication and Management Skills
  • Lecture courses on Nanoscience and Functional Nanomaterials
  • Training in Advanced Tools for Nanoscience through bespoke online modules, lectures and practical work
  • Two Training Projects (one per term)

Summer Term

  • Research Project

Students can choose their Training and Research Projects from a wide range of proposals.

IELTS score required for this program is 6.5 (6.0 in every section). Application deadline for 2017 is 30 June (program starts in September). Required documents include:

  • Two academic references

  • Degree certificate

  • Academic transcripts

  • Personal statement

  • CV

  • English language certificate

Candidates will also be interviewed. Interview will include conversation about academic background, motivation and research project. Applicants should also describe their research project in the personal statement. After receiving an offer, candidates have 40 days to accept or decline it.
