Master's Degree Programme in Photonics is a two-year programme taught in English at the Institute of Photonics, University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, Finland. Master's degree in photonics gives students good expertise to modern optics and photonics at both theoretical and experimental level. Our graduates find work as technology specialists, researchers, and project managers in the development organisations and R&D departments of photonics industry.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Photonics is a two year full time study program. Master's degree consists of 120 ECTS credits of studies in one main subject, photonics. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The objective of Master's degree in photonics is to give students good expertise to modern optics and photonics at both theoretical and experimental level. This contains ability to understand optical phenomena, design and analysis of optical systems, fabrication methods of photonics structures, and ability to scientific and technical communication in photonics. This all gives capability to work in photonics related companies as an expert and developer, and to continue to PhD studies in photonics. The education is based on high-quality photonics research in the department.

DEGREE STRUCTURE

  • Courses and laboratory practices 90 ECTS
  • MSc Thesis 30 ECTS

Total 120 ECTS

STUDIES CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING MODULES:

  • General studies provide basics for the further studies.
  • Core courses provide the fundamental basis for light and light-matter interaction.
  • Laboratory practices contain a large amount of practical working in photonics.
  • Waves and scattering consist of advanced topics on modern light propagation and scattering.
  • Light and Matter inspect light-matter interaction at microscopic level.
  • Displays, Colors, and Applications introduce some special topics on optics.
  • Master thesis is your own large project.

Who should apply?

Graduates who are seeking challenges in the field of optics and photonics and who hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in physics, optics, photonics, physical and engineering sciences with an extensive physics basic education, or another discipline related to the programme, entailing proficiency in physics and mathematics.

The University of Eastern Finland will have a substantial number of scholarships (tuition waivers) available for students who are required to pay tuition fees in Master’s degree programmes offered in English.  The scholarship can cover the tuition fee either in full (100%) or partially (80%). In the Master's degree programme in Photonics, these scholarships (tuition waivers) are available to 75% of the students who are accepted to the programme and required to pay tuition.

The scholarship (tuition waiver) is applied for when applying for admission to the university by filling out the relevant section of the application form. The decision about the scholarship is made in connection with student admission and the student is notified of the matter in the letter of acceptance. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of the student's academic achievements described in the admission criteria. The scholarship is personal and it is awarded for two academic years. The scholarship awarded for the second year is however conditional and tied to the progress of the student’s studies.

In addition, scholarships to living costs are available for all admitted students (intake 2017) irrespective of whether they are required to pay tuition or not. The amount of this scholarship is 620 EUR per month for the maximum of two-year studies (20 months). The application is automatically considered for these scholarships and there is no need to apply for this scholarship separately. Those students who are awarded the scholarship must sign and return the Grant payment contract to the programme coordinator.
