The MA in Social Work aims to produce highly skilled, knowledgeable and reflective social work practitioners. The course aims to enable students to apply theoretical and empirical knowledge to research and practice and to promote students critical reflection on service development and delivery and on their own practice.

In line with the requirements of the GSCC, the course aims to provide students with the means of demonstrating that they have met the national occupational standards for Social Work and are suitable for admission to the General Social Care Council register of Social Workers.

Teaching and assessment methods
A wide range of teaching/learning methods are used including self-directed group work, lectures, seminars, project work, simulations and role play. Tutorial support is offered in group sessions and on an individual basis. Practice learning consists of direct practice with individuals, families and groups and is assessed via a series of practice portfolios.

Assessment methods are varied and include written assignments, short examinations, group presentations and a 12,000 word dissertation.

Entry RequirementsA minimum of a lower second-class honours degree in any discipline and GCSE Maths and English at a grade C or above (the equivalent of Key Skills Level 2) are required for entry to the course. Further to this, applicants must also have a minimum of three to six months (equivalent of 500 hours) experience of social care (through employment or voluntary work) and be able to demonstrate the personal qualities required for competent social work practice.English Language RequirementsApplicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately before the start of their course, need to satisfy the University´s English language requirement. * From students who take IELTS (the British Council´s International English Language Testing System), we look for an overall score of 6.0 or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 6.5 or above for all other courses. * From students who take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), we look for 575/233/90* or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 600/250/100* for all other courses.
