Through the MSc programme in Animal-Derived Foods (also referred to as EM Food of Life), you will acquire basic theoretical knowledge, practical technologies and research and development methodologies that prepare you for a career in the food production industries.

The programme is offered in English.

During the two-year programme, you work with several aspects of animal-derived food production: The increasing global demand for meat and milk products, the increasing emphasis on product quality and proven health benefits for the consumer, the increasing focus on animal health and welfare, and the demand for a reduced environmental impact of the production.

You will become an expert in the interaction between animal science, food production, food technology and the scientific, social and cultural issues influencing the food production chain.

Animal-Derived Foods is part of the EU-funded Erasmus Mundus programme. It is offered by a consortium of four European universities: Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, University of Helsinki and University of Copenhagen. You are required to study at two of these universities of your choice and depending on which academic profile you want.

Profile and Career
Animal-Derived Foods is part of the EU-funded Erasmus Mundus programme, which aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and the mobility of students within the EU. Hence, Animal-Derived Foods is also referred to as "Erasmus Mundus Food of Life" (EM Food of Life).

EM Food of Life is a cross-disciplinary programme in the science of animal-derived foods. In a unique way, the course combines animal science and food science and technology, focusing on the social as well as cultural and, of course, scientific aspects of the food production chain. EM Food of Life has inputs from both animal and food science, and outputs relevant to both consumer and animal health. Essential components are:

* Food Meat and milk products derived from all relevant farm species, including pigs, cattle, small ruminants and poultry
* Life Effects of nutrition on the health of the consumer, and effects of production systems on the health of the animal

Topics you will work with:

* How to meet increased global demand for meat and milk products
* How to deal with increased emphasis on product quality and proven health benefits for the consumer
* How to improve animal health and welfare and achieve a reduced environmental impact

Career Opportunities
The EM Food of Life programme will prepare you for a career in the Danish or international food production industries. You will gain a solid theoretical foundation, practical experience and technical skills in both animal science and food technology subjects, and you will obtain significant knowledge of the global challenges involved in providing safe, healthy and nutritious meat and milk products to feed our growing human population.

When you graduate, you will be able to apply to high-level PhD programmes, pursue a management career in the primary production industries or food processing industries, work in consultancy, for private companies or for international and governmental agencies and NGOs such as FAO and WHO.

As an EM Food of Life student, you must study in two of the consortium partner countries. If you hold an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, these two countries must be different from the country in which you obtained your last university degree.

You will also have the opportunity for a short study period in Canada, the UK, New Zealand or Italy.

All students will attend an Introductory Module at the start of Year One and a Summer School at the start of Year Two.

In the first year of the programme, you choose either animal or food science-related courses. During the second year, you can choose elective courses, and you finalise your studies by writing a research-based thesis related to either animal or food science or a combination of both.

* Category B Scholarships for European nationals and others complying with the 12 months rule: Total 20.000

Category A scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and the EEA-EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Furthermore, you must comply with the 12 months rule: you must not be a resident nor have carried out your main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Category B scholarships can be awarded to any masters students who do not fulfil the category A criteria defined above, i.e. nationality requirement and 12 months rule.

For both categories please note:
