Our Course is designed to help you identify, develop and refine a progressive and critical engagement with animation in all it´s forms. While developing the skills to help you realise your ideas, our course provides a bridge to the industry or to further academic study.

Above all this is a vocational course that emphasises the importance of maintaining an individualised creative and innovative approach to film making. Our students work towards the completion of a unique body of work that includes a professional showreel, portfolio and short film supported by a critical paper. The course enjoys industry recognition as part of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales, which provides access to masterclasses, mentoring, specialised equipment and bursaries.

What you study
PART 1
This is the taught component of the course and includes practice, theory and research elements. It comprises a flexible modular framework where you will be taught animation/film studies, timing for animation and scriptwriting, as well as essential software skills, Maya, Life Drawing and 3D stop motion. You will gain relevant industrial practice through work placements or case studies. These sessions are complemented by masterclasses and mentoring from industry professionals and the annual animator in residence scheme.

PART 2
You will make a 3-minute film, or equivalent, which is supported by a written critical paper. This is achieved through establishing your own research directions, which will be formed through negotiation with the course team. Such negotiations will take place through a regular series of pitch presentations. You will be supported in your work through tutorials with the course team and industry professionals. Financial support is also available through a production bursary.

MFA
The MFA award is based on supervised study. This work can be focused on significant professional experience gained through work placements or internships organised through the Skillset Screen Academy Wales; an extended animation production; or a research project that could lead to registration for an MPhil/PhD.
