The Accounting Major is a demanding program that prepares students to become an integral part of an organization's financial management team or to enter public practice as an auditor, tax specialist, or consultant. Governments, non-profits, major corporations, small businesses, and high-worth individuals all need accountants to manage their financial affairs.Upon graduation, most students will choose to pursue one of three professional accounting designations: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified General Accountant (CGA). With the Accounting Major, they will enter these programs with all the possible exemptions and be well prepared to write their rigorous final accreditation exams. TRU students have consistently finished above the national and provincial averages on these tests. Once they have developed an area of interest within the profession, many accountants go on to earn a second, more specialized designation. Some also complete graduate degrees and pursue careers in education or research. No matter what they choose, accountants are professionals and must make a life-long commitment to learning to remain current in the field. The professional societies guarantee this by enforcing a demanding professional development requirement as a condition of maintaining an accounting designation.
