Description
Designed to meet the needs of an expanding sports fisheries market, as well as the worldwide aquaculture industry, this one year top-up programme will give you the necessary scientific knowledge, managerial skills and analytical capabilities for a successful career. From the outset you will build on your previous experiences and gain an insight into the importance of this sector for food production and sustainability. You will take a 'hands on' approach and learn about intensive aquaculture.
The Intensive Aquaculture course aims to equip students with the expertise to effectively manage intensive recirculation aquaculture systems. It also helps students to evaluate system suitability for intensively cultured species. The Current Issues course will examine selected issues in a specific cognate area within aquaculture and fisheries management industries. The Data Analysis course aims to equip students with the statistical analysis and presentation methods to carry out critical analysis of laboratory or field data. The Advanced Management Studies course aims to equip students with the expertise to effectively manage a land-based enterprise.
The programme also includes a dissertation project. This aims to develop the ability of the student to work independently in applying his/her knowledge to the analysis and solution of specific problems, in a related area of their choice.
Students also undertake a work-based learning project, which provides opportunities for students to identify and critically evaluate the range of opportunities within industry and decide on an area of specialist personal development in relation to their career aspirations within the industry.
The aims of the programme are:
- To provide a progression route to level 6 for those successful completers of the FdSc Fisheries Management programme.
- To promote an understanding of the aquaculture industry including intensive aquaculture production systems and the species cultured, while at the same time develop analytical and problem solving skills.
- To achieve a balance between academic and vocational training whereby students can achieve their full potential and enhance employment and career opportunities
