Group T organizes four academic master programs. Within these four masters, different focuses (also known as concentrations) are offered. You choose one master focus. This allows you to specialize further in your area of technological expertise, or to stay in touch with other technological disciplines. Upon graduation you can enter the job market or go on to do a PhD or postgrad program.

In general the goals of the academic master programs are to:

  • give the future engineer a general academic education;
  • impart on the future engineer advanced knowledge and competence in Engineering, Enterprising, Educating, Environmenting, and Ensembling (i.e. the 5 Es) and, more specifically, in the chosen major;
  • impart the required research skills;
  • train the future engineer to be capable to start work as a master. In other words, prepare him/her for practicing science and technology autonomously, using the acquired knowledge and competence in the engineering profession and marking off a lifelong learning and development path.

We offer our master programs in 2 formulas:

  • A one-year path consisting of 60 credits.
  • The program spread over 2 years, adding 60 credits in the form of an extra in-company project (the so-called Entrepreneurial Engineering Experience).
    This formula pays extra attention to personal development and international collaboration with companies and universities. It is unique in Flanders. Here you can achieve extraordinary projects such as the development of eco-friendly cars.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Engineering ExperienceThe focal point of the Master in Engineering one-year formula is the extensive Engineering Experience of 20 credits, i.e. the master's project. To support this experience, you work with your supervisors on a number of choices. These choices are taken up in a personal development plan. You can also opt to follow a number of external courses or programs in the framework of the Engineering Experience.

Engineering ContentIn addition, you can choose within your major a specific technology focus (sometimes also referred to as a 'concentration'). You also follow a number of course units on management and communication, within which there is some choice.

5E-ContextYou have the choice of a number of course units on current themes relating to the 5E-Context (Engineering, Enterprising, Educating, Environmenting, and Ensembling).

The Biochemical Engineering includes various sectors (food, biomedical, pharmaceutical, environmental, etc.). In addition to fundamental (bio)chemical-scientific course units, the curriculum includes course units in socio-economics (company management, economy) and biotechnology (engineering course units, separation techniques, fermentation technology, molecular biology techniques, industrial biochemistry and microbiology, environmental technology, bioreactor design, etc.). An elaborate cross-campus elective package, as well as the master's thesis in a research and/or industrial context allows you to establish your own emphasis.
After completion of the master you are trained to lead and coordinate industrial production units and research, analysis and screening laboratories in technical-commercial, administrative, and educational environments. The food and biotechnology sector, the environmental sector, pharmaceutical industry, and life sciences offer a broad field of work.

Focus Medical Bioengineering This focus relates to biotechnological developments in the medical sector. Knowledge of human physiological systems (the cardiovascular system, neurophysiology, etc.) and medical engineering techniques form the foundation of developments in the field of artificial organs, tissue engineering, biomaterials, bioelectronics and new diagnostic techniques (micro array technology, PCR technology.)
