The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Ruhr University Bochum offers students a comprehensive foundation in the fundamental principles and practical techniques of chemistry. This undergraduate program is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the key areas of chemical sciences, including inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical chemistry, along with insights into-related disciplines such as biochemistry and materials science. Throughout the course of study, students will engage in both theoretical coursework and hands-on laboratory experiments, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific methodology essential for research and industry careers.

The program emphasizes a strong scientific basis, enabling students to understand molecular and atomic interactions, chemical reactions, and the properties of different substances. Students will also explore modern analytical techniques and instrumentation used in chemical analysis, quality control, and research applications. The curriculum is structured to ensure a progressive learning experience, beginning with foundational topics in the first semesters and advancing to specialized courses in the later stages of studies. Opportunities for interdisciplinary integration and elective modules allow students to tailor their education to personal interests and career goals.

Practical laboratory work constitutes a core component of the program, providing students with essential skills in experimental design, data analysis, and safety procedures. Additionally, the program encourages participation in research projects, internships, and collaborations with industry partners, which prepare students for professional roles in chemistry-related fields. Graduates of this program are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in chemical research, development, quality assurance, teaching, and further academic pursuits at the master's and doctoral levels.

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Ruhr University Bochum fosters a stimulating academic environment supported by experienced faculty members and state-of-the-art laboratories. The program aims to develop scientifically competent graduates capable of contributing to innovative solutions in industrial, environmental, and health-related challenges. Whether aiming for a career in research, industry, or academia, students receive a rigorous education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing them for a successful future in the dynamic world of chemistry.

Educational organisation

  • Mandatory lectures in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry in the first year
  • mandatory in-depth practical in interfacial systems chemistry in the first year
  • two elective advanced practicals in the focal point programme in the first year
  • three elective lecture courses on specialised topics of chemistry in the first year

  • two elective lecture courses in the second year
  • one research practical in the focal point programme in the second year
  • Master's thesis in the second year (six months)

Study abroad unit(s)

Credit points achieved abroad will be transferred to the student's records.

Internships

There are no internships within the MSc programme.

Forms of assessment

  • Written examinations for mandatory lecture courses
  • oral examinations for elective lecture courses
  • performance in practical courses is graded

Course objectives

The MSc programme provides a scientific education which brings students into close theoretical and experimental contact with modern developments in chemistry and enables them to solve complex chemical problems. Lecture courses and practicals in various focal points bring students into contact with the research activities of the faculty. Many research topics are incorporated into research networks including non-university research institutes. In the Master's thesis students must show that they are able to solve a chemical problem independently.
