The four-semester Master's study programme offers in-depth scientific education with specific regard to main research topics in chemistry, such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, building chemistry, and macromolecular chemistry. A specialisation in "Materials and Interfaces", "Light and Matter" or "Molecular Sciences" is possible.

Educational organisation

The Master's study programme provides in-depth scientific education with specific regard to main research topics in chemistry and adjacent disciplines. During the first semester, advanced theoretical and methodical skills in the core subjects and in two application-oriented fields of study (applied chemistry) are imparted. In these courses, perspectives for specialisation in the respective subject are highlighted and the basis for academic development is created. From the second semester onward, deepening of knowledge in compulsory optional modules takes place. In the fourth semester, the Master's thesis is written in the subject of specialisation.

Course objectives

The consecutive Master's study programme is designed to enable students to directly change over to a chemistry-oriented occupational field or to begin the doctorate programme in chemistry on the basis of an in-depth scientific education. In particular, students are to acquaint themselves with modern theoretical and experimental developments in the field of study in its entire breadth. Moreover, they will be enabled to develop strategies for solving complex issues individually and in teams, and they will be able to act with scientific and social responsibility. Variable specialisation shall enable each student to put together an individual educational profile in the course of his or her studies.

Enrolment fees

Approx. 250 EUR per semester for a public transport ticket (valid for six months in the entire state of North Rhine-Westphalia), social services contribution and students' activities

Costs of living

The city of Siegen is one of the German cities with very moderate costs for accommodation, but it has excellent living conditions. Living expenses including accommodation and health insurance range from 650 to 750 EUR per month.

Accommodation

German universities usually do not have campus systems like the universities in some other countries where students can find accommodation directly on university property. Therefore, students must find rooms on their own. Rooms in private accommodation cost 280 EUR on average. Rooms in student residences cost between 220 and 400 EUR. Direct support for finding suitable accommodation is offered by the Department International Student Affairs.
