The taught MTh is intended to give students with an undergraduate background in Divinity, Religious Studies, Religious History or History an opportunity to study Church History at an advanced level and to acquire the skills and background necessary for independent postgraduate research and teaching in this area. It will also appeal to those who wish to further an interest in Christian History as part of a programme of life-long learning.
PROGRAMME LENGTH
MTh 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time
I. DR5085 Theology in the University (15 credits) DR5091 Dissertation Colloquium (15 credits) HI501G Introduction to Historical Research (15 credits)
II. A Dissertation of approximately 15,000 words on a topic related to the degree (60 credit points)
III. Of the five elective courses, at least three must be taken in the following areas:
* DR5074/DR5574 The Reformation in Scotland (15 credit points)
* DR5079/DR5579 The Followers of Lady Poverty: St Francis and His Disciples (15 credit points)
* HI501A Basic Latin for Postgraduates (15 credit points)
* HI501C/HI551C Witchcraft, Traditional Practices and the Rise of a Protestant Culture in Early Modern Scotland (15 credit points)
* HI501V/HI551V Protestant Identities in the Early Modern British Isles (15 credits)
* HI502A/HI552A Canon Law and Lawyers in the Middle Ages (15 credit points) Any remaining electives may be taken from a range of taught Masters level courses in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy.
Assessment
The taught courses will be assessed by course work, by written examination, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course. The dissertation course will be assessed by submission of the dissertation. An oral examination may be held at the discretion of the Examiners. The degree of MTh shall not be awarded to candidates who fail to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in the dissertation, irrespective of their performance in other courses; such candidates may, at the discretion of the Examiners, be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award.
