Cape Breton University has the only Communication Program with a major degree in Atlantic Canada. Our program is diverse and interdisciplinary, drawing on areas such as political science, anthropology, sociology and business fields. We offer a range of courses that include performance-based courses like Public Communication and Voice and Articulation; relationship-based courses like Interpersonal Communication and Family Communication; media-focused courses, such as Issues in Media Studies and Rhetoric in Popular Culture; theoretical and critical courses such as Communication and Culture, Rhetorical Theory, and Communication Criticism; and courses related to specific work contexts, like Health Communication and Crime and Communication. Our three introductory coursesпПСIntroduction to Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to Public Communication and Issues in Media StudiesпПСrequire that students take a one-hour a week lab that is facilitated by upper-level students. In this lab students put into practice many of the theories discussed in the classroom as well as practicing and perfecting their presentations. This lab is unique in Canada, and it provides students with enjoyable group experiences and a chance to express themselves in a safe environment. Students who excel in Communication Studies may wish to become Communication Lab Peer Facilitators by enrolling in our facilitation course. These students gain invaluable experience by facilitating in the educational setting. This work is helpful for students planning to continue into teaching, counseling or other fields where individual responsibility and initiative are important. It is an excellent item to include on your resume.
