The focus area of the profile is the economics of health care. The profile is designed to provide specialisation in the related fields of health economics, health policy and health care management.

The demand for graduates with competencies within health economics and related fields continues to increase as the demand for more advanced and expensive healthcare puts pressure on policy decision makers and healthcare industry managers. The purpose of the profile is to give the students the capacity to ask questions that are characteristic for applications and policy analysis within the health care sector. The profile gives students the ability to use economic theory and methods to give reflective answers.

The student will gain competencies in analysing policies and governance issues with an emphasis on health care institutions. In addition the student will gain strong analytical skills within applied economics in general. This is a qualification that may further career opportunities both in the private and the public sector - nationally as well as internationally. Graduates can expect to find employment in public administrations, government departments and agencies, management consultancies, international organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and academia.

The graduate programme in Economics consists of a series of compulsory courses and electives, some predetermined and others free of choice amongst graduate courses offered at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. The programme is completed with your masters thesis.

The individual profiles have different areas of focus and therefore you will have great opportunities to choose exactly the profile you find most interesting.

The compulsory courses ensure you a solid theoretical and methodical foundation relevant for all profiles.

Furthermore, it is possible to do courses offered at other faculties and universities both in Denmark and abroad. The Study Board must validate your choices first.

Likewise, it is possible to obtain ECTS credits equivalent to an elective course for a report based on a relevant internship (at an embassy, a ministry or an organization etc.).

Teaching methods

The year is divided into two semesters: The autumn semester begins on September 1st and ends just before Christmas. The spring semester begins on February 1st and ends around May/June.

The teaching takes place primarily as lectures and possibly with practical assignment lessons as supplements. Furthermore, individual supervision can occur.

The student must purchase books and other educational material on his/her own.

Examination types

Each course is completed with an exam. The examination types vary, but can take form as e.g. a written exam, an oral exam, a take-home assignment or a multiple-choice test. The examination type for the individual course will be stated in the course description.

Learning outcomes
The focus area of the profile is applied microeconomics linking theory to practice and making economics functional. The student will gain competencies in analysing policies and governance issues with an emphasis on health care institutions. In addition the student will gain strong analytical skills within applied economics in general beyond the scope of health care. This includes skills within economic evaluation and microeconometrics. The profile is designed to provide the student with qualifications within two particular but related fields:

1) The profile provides the student with the ability to use economic theory and methods to give reflective answers on issues of relevance to decision makers.

2) The profile provides specialisation in the areas of health economics, health policy and health care management.

General competences for the Economics profiles:

The master's programme in Economics, cand.oecon., provides knowledge based on the highest international research within the profile area. MSc graduates in Economics are able to understand and on a scientific basis reflect on this knowledge as well as identify relevant scientific problems.

MSc graduates in Economics are able to work independently and with a systematic, goal-oriented and analytical approach to solve various problems, both individually and in collaboration with others. MSc graduates in Economics are able to structure their own learning and are capable of seeking and adapting new knowledge acquired from national and international sources

The admission requirement for the M.Sc. in Economics (cand.oecon.) in Health Care Management and Econimics is the Danish three-year Bachelor of Science in Economics, Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration (HA) or Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Economy. Applicants with other relevant backgrounds can also apply. The applications will be evaluated on an individual basis. It may be required of the applicants to take supplementary courses. The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.

BHJ Scholarship
Only available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg Campus

Six one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.

A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
