The Centre for Digital Entertainments purpose is to train the next generation of leaders in the Image processing, Computer Games, Film Visual Effects, Virtual Worlds, Visualisation and Animation sectors. A collaboration between the University of Bath and Bournemouth University, the CDE offers the opportunity to conduct research in a company within these sectors.

The Centre has received 7 288 000 national funding from the UKs primary funder of engineering and physical sciences research, EPSRC. Students will either study at the Department of Computer Science, University of Bath or at Bournemouth Universitys Media School.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath, home to students of the EngD in Digital Media, is the countrys leading provider of fully-supported placements. 75% of the work submitted for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Computer Science was outstanding. The Department ranks 4th in the UK for research.

Bournemouth Universitys National Centre for Computer Animation brings together art and science by educating practitioners to link creative and technical processes in their work. Its research has been rated as of world-leading quality in the RAE since 2001. NCCAs courses have been Skillset-accredited.

Our doctoral programme lasts 4 years, of which 3 will be spent in a company engaged on research projects, one year on Masters level courses at Bath and/ or Bournemouth. This taught programme will be tailor- made for your needs and arranged in consultation with you, your host company and academic supervisors. The taught units are usually taken before moving into the company. An overview of taught units available is here:
At the end of the fourth year of the programme EngD students (called Research Engineers) submit, for the Engineering Doctorate, either a thesis or a portfolio. Among this material, there must be strong evidence of doctoral-quality research.
