Our BA English Language and English Language Teaching will address issues like: do you want to apply your knowledge of the English language to the teaching of English? What do you need to know about the language to teach it? What do you need to know about language teaching and learning? How are English sentences structured? How are English words formed? How many words do you know? How many sounds does English have? Do English children and foreign learners learn the language in the same way? What is the value of error correction? What do English teachers do in the classroom? What roles do they adopt? How do the roles of teachers and learners change according to the background context? Although it is aimed primarily at those who want to teach English to non-native speakers of English, this principles of this course also apply to the teaching of English as a mother tongue and it has a slightly greater bias towards English linguistics than our BA TEFL.

Your first year offers foundation modules in all our Departments main areas of specialisation, thus offering you maximum flexibility just in case you decide to switch courses later. Your second year includes modules in The Structure of English, Second Language Learning, and Methodology of TEFL, along with any other second year linguistics module. Your third year offers maximum flexibility, having only one compulsory module, Directed Classroom Observation. Our BA English Language and English Language Teaching offers you the opportunity to learn more about the structure of sounds, words and sentences in English, and to learn about contemporary techniques and materials used to teach English to non-native speakers of English.

Course Content

The special characteristics of our course are flexibility and choice. In your first year you take three compulsory modules and one optional module. During your second year you take two compulsory modules with two optional modules, which must be English Language modules. In your final year, all your modules are optional, but you must take three English Language modules. For BA English Language one of your optional modules can be from across the faculty in your first and final year. There is a great deal of choice for these optional modules due to the extensive range of modules offered by our departments.
With a small number of exceptions, if you successfully complete the first year of your BA, then you are qualified to enter the second year of that course and a range of other courses: for example, if you take economics, politics, philosophy and sociology, then you have a choice of at least nine possible single or joint honours courses at the end of your first year. This means you can change your course, providing you have taken the appropriate pre-requisites and places are available.
We operate a credit framework for our awards, which is based on principles widely used across the UK university sector. Each module has a credit rating attached and our standard three-year course consists of 360 credits (120 credits in your first year, and 240 credits across your second and final years).

• GCSE English: C
• IB: 32-30 points (we consider IB certificates at the Higher Level on a case-by-case basis)
• Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 6 level three credits at distinction and the remainder at merit (or above) or achievement of the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 45 level three credits at merit (or above).

English language requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: IELTS 6.0 overall with minimum 5.5 in each component (or equivalent). Different requirements apply for second year entry.
