This preliminary research programme addresses questions concerning fashion as a discourse and the construction of identity with regard to fashion as an industry. The programme also investigates fashion as an aesthetic and material form, including representations of fashion in the visual arts, photography, theatre, film, advertising and marketing. The programme concludes with an independent thesis of 15 ECTS, which should evidence high scholarly quality and prepare students for research.

Courses
The programme comprises two years of study, a total of 120 credits.

The first year includes the following units:

- History of Dress and Social Functions 7.5 Ects
- Philosophy of Science for Fashion Scholars 7.5 Ects
- Fashion and Materiality, 7,5 Ects
- Meanings of Fashion 7.5 Ects
- Fashion as an Industry 7.5 Ects
- Consumer Culture Theory and Fashion 7.5 Ects
- Magisters Thesis 15 Ects

Units 1-6 focus on different perspectives and areas of study within fashion studies. Unit 7, the Magister thesis, is
an opportunity for students to gain greater insight into a research topic.

The second year of the programme consists of the following units:

- Thesis proposal 7.5 Ects
- Literature Review 7.5 Ects
- Scientific Method and Research Ethics 7.5 Ects
- English for Academic Research 7.5 Ects
- Master's Thesis 30 Ects

Units 1 4 focus on the research process in its various parts, as well as writing in English for academic research.
Unit 5, the Master's thesis, is a chance to display a broader base of knowledge and an elaboration of a research
topic, resulting in greater opportunities for further research in a specific area. For further information on individual course offerings, see the syllabus.

Exam
Upon completion of the programme, the student is awarded a Master's degree in the field of fashion studies. It is
also possible to stop and obtain only the Magister degree after completing the first year of the programme. In
order to move on from the Magister year to the Master year, the final thesis for the Magister degree must have
been completed and the student must have received a passing grade.

General requirements for Master's programmes:- An academic degree (i.e. a Bachelors degree or the equivalent, at least 180 ECTS.) Stockholm University does accept applicants in their last year of Bachelor's studies. See note below: Previous university records- Proficiency in English, which must be demonstrated in one of the following ways: * IELTS score (Academic) of 6.5 or more (with no section scoring below 5.5) * TOEFL score 20 in written test, total score of 90 (internet based) * TOEFL score 4,5 in written test, total score of 575 (paperbased) * Cambridge/Oxford - Advanced or Proficiency levelTOEFL test scores must be sent directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS), to University Admissions in Sweden (institution code: SWEDEN 3477). English language test exemptions Some students may be exempt from submitting formal test evidence. These are: * Students who have a Bachelor's degree from a university where English is the only language of instruction, according to the latest edition of International Handbook of Universities. * Students who have a Bachelor's degree (a Swedish Kandidatexamen or equivalent academic qualifications) with English as the major subject. * Students with a 4-year university degree in Engineering, Science or Technology from India and Pakistan. * Students who have 30 HE credits from a Nordic country and the language of instruction of the course/programme/university is English.
